    A my Lowell Poet
Amy Lowell ( 27k JPG image ), American Imagist poet, was a woman of great accomplishment. She was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to a prominent family of high-achievers. Her environment was literary and sophisticated, and when she left private school at 17 to care for her elderly parents, she embarked on a program of self-education. Her poetic career began in 1902 when she saw Eleonora Duse, a famous actress, perform on stage. Overcome with Eleonora's beauty and talent, she wrote her first poem addressed to the actress. They met only a couple times and never developed a relationship, but Eleonora inspired many poems from Amy and triggered her career. Ada Russell, another actress, became the love of Amy's life. She met Ada in 1909 and they remained together until Amy's death in 1925. Amy wrote many, many poems about Ada. In the beginning, as with her previous poems about women, she wrote in such a way that only those who knew the inspiration for a poem would recognize its lesbian content. But as time went on, she censored her work less and less. By the time she wrote Pictures of the Floating World , her poems about Ada were much more blatantly erotic. The series "Planes of Personality: Two Speak Together" chronicles their relationship, including the intensely erotic poem "

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887) was an American poet. She is best known for her sonnet, "The New Colossus" (1883), which was inscribed on a plaque inside the Statue of Liberty.
Lazarus was born in New York City. She wrote sentimental poetry about love and death and also translated works by the French author Victor Hugo and the German authors Heinrich Heine and Johann von Goethe. In 1881, violent anti-Jewish attacks took place in Russia, resulting in a wave of Jewish immigration to the United States. The attacks inspired Lazarus, a Jew, to write poetry that emotionally protested against the persecution of the Jews in Russia. The poems were collected in Songs of a Semite Amy Lowell (1874-1925) was an American poet, critic, and biographer. Like a number of other poets of her day, Lowell was strongly influenced by the American poet Ezra Pound. She was particularly influenced by Pound's belief that many poetic conventions of the past were worn out and restricted the poet's creativity. With Pound and other poets, Lowell became a leader of a movement called imagism. The imagists emphasized the clear, objective, and precise treatment of images, objects, and events. They wrote in a style known as free verse.
Lowell experimented with her own version of free verse, beginning with her second volume of poems

1. "For books are more than books, they are the life, the very heart and core of ages past, the reason why men worked and died, the essence and quintessence of their lives." Amy Lowell
More quotes about: Books Heart Life Men ... Reason 2. "I ask but one thing of you, only one, That always you will be my dream of you; That never shall I wake to find untrue All this I have believed and rested on, Forever vanished, like a vision gone Out into the night. Alas, how few There are who strike in us a chord we knew Existed, but so seldom heard its tone We tremble at the half-forgotten sound. The world is full of rude awakenings And heaven-born castles shattered to the ground, Yet still our human longing vainly clings To a belief in beauty through all wrongs. O stay your hand, and leave my heart its songs!"

Classic Love and Romance Poems Madonna of the Evening Flowers
by Amy Lowell. 1874-1925
All day long I have been working
Now I am tired.
I call: "Where are you?"
But there is only the oak tree rustling in the wind.
The house is very quiet,
The sun shines in on your books,
On your scissors and thimble just put down,
But you are not there.
Suddenly I am lonely: Where are you? I go about searching. Then I see you, Standing under a spire of pale blue larkspur, With a basket of roses on your arm. You are cool, like silver, And you smile. I think the Canterbury bells are playing little tunes, You tell me that the peonies need spraying, That the columbines have overrun all bounds, That the pyrus japonica should be cut back and rounded. You tell me these things. But I look at you, heart of silver, White heart-flame of polished silver

Under the able direction of poet/novelist Trish Shields, these pages of Just About Write will introduce Lesbian poets from the past, a little about their herstories, and a sampling of their works. These women were pioneers, and they left a remarkable legacy for us all. We urge you to take the time to learn something about them and their lasting impressions of life, love, and the world around us. Amy Lowell Amy Lowell was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on February 9, 1874. She was the youngest of five children born into a life of wealth and prominence. Her brother, Percival Lowell, became an astronomer in his late 30s and founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. He is credited with discovering the "canals" of Mars. Amy Lowell's other brother, Abbott Lawrence Lowell, became president of Harvard University. Higher education was not something Lowell women were offered. They were supposed to be gentile ladies of grace who would always defer to men. However, having access to her father's 7,000-volume library ensured that Amy would be well-read and she began a self-education program that would encourage her to write and keep a journal. "Dream Drops; or, Stories from Fairyland" was published privately in 1887 by her mother, who also contributed material, and the proceeds were donated to the Perkins Institute for the Blind.

Reading Amy Lowell: Selected Poems By Judith Moore
Published December 9, 2004
Reading from previous weeks Amy Lowell Edited and Selected and with an Introduction by Honor Moore Library of America, 2004; 156 pages; $20 FROM THE DUST JACKET: A cigar-smoking proponent of free-verse modernism in open rebellion against her distinguished Boston lineage, Amy Lowell (1874-1925) cut an indelible public figure. But in the words of editor Honor Moore, "What strikes the modern reader is not the sophistication of Lowell's feminist or antiwar stances, but the bald audacity of her eroticism." Lowell was at the center of a group of pioneering modernists who, in an era convulsed by change, rejected musty Victorian standards and wrote poems of bracing immediacy. This new selection captures her full formal range: the "cadenced" verse of her Imagist masterpieces, her experiments in "polyphonic prose," her narrative poetry, and her adaptations from classic Chinese. It gives a fresh sense of the passion and energy of her work. "Hard and clear, never blurred nor indefinite," these were the qualities that Amy Lowell sought in the Imagist poems that made her one of the most famous American poets of her time. Uncompromising in their sensuality and passionate directness, her love poems remain exhilarating and inspiring. Honor Moore's new selection and introduction reaffirm Lowell's unique contribution to the flowering of American modernism.
