Many of these travelers were avid communicators, writing letters, articles, and keeping journals of their travels. All these personal interpretations of what they witnessed combined to create exotic images of distant lands for those remaining at home. Novels, plays, ballets and operettas were set in foreign locations. One of the last countries to be opened to the West was Japan. In 1854 Commodore Perry concluded his treaty with Japan, and quickly it became a must for travelers. For example, Lafcadio Hearn, the half-Greek, half-Irish journalist and adventurer, led an impoverished career in Ireland and the United States before arriving in Japan in 1890. He became infatuated with the country, married a Japanese bride, changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo and eventually became a Japanese citizen. De Tahiti à l'Extrême-Orient, en passant par l'Afrique du Nord et la Turquie - sa patrie d'élection, les pays traversés servent de cadres à ses intrigues romanesques. Loti s'affirme comme "le plus grand écrivain exotique", soufflant un siège à l'Académie française au nez de Zola en 1891. Caractérisées par un lexique pauvre et par la présence de personnages aussi frustes que passionnés, ses oeuvres ont été comparées aux toiles des "Impressionnistes", restituant par petites touches le langage des éléments. Cité en 1918 pour son action militaire, Loti a toujours veillé à observer d'un oeil critique le paysage politique international, prenant publiquement position, notamment en faveur de la cause turque. Des funérailles nationales ont été organisées afin de célébrer sa mémoire. SES ANECDOTES Orientalismes Il a transformé son logis de Rochefort en maison orientale, y incluant même une petite mosquée, un minaret, et des salles égyptiennes et chinoises. Dei tre testi, "Gerusalemme" è forse quello più denso e stilisticamente più riuscito, Loti infatti coniuga con arte il doppio ruolo di pellegrino e di turista, infondendo un'intensa emozione spirituale alla descrizione della città sacra in cui le tre religioni monoteistiche si incontrano.
