No. 35, Spring/Summer 1994 The Deserts in Literature The Desert by Pierre Loti (1850-1923) Pierre Loti is the pseudonym under which the French Decadent novelist - and naval officer, artist, and acrobat - Julien Viaud wrote. , first published in Paris in 1895, is not a novel but a poetic account of the author's journey by camel caravan from Suez to Gaza by way of Sinai in 1894. As Peter Wild observes of Loti in his introductory essay in this issue, "his writing shows a gross misunderstanding of the Arab cultures he encountered, but . . . Elle nous décrit Nagasaki à une époque où le Japon était encore un état exotique. Pierre LOTI ne fait jamais de roman de complaisance. Aziyadé aura été un amour qu’il n’oubliera pas, mais lorsqu’il décrivait la Turquie, il le faisait sans chercher à enjoliver. C’est que Pierre LOTI ne travaille pas pour une agence de voyage, mais pour un journal. C’est souvent lorsqu’il est en mission sur un navire qu’il fait des reportages, et disons-le d’emblée : le Japon ne lui plaît pas. Et si on décortique un peu Madame Chrysanthème, on pourrait même être tenté de croire qu’après l’attrait d’une nouvelle terre, il se lasse de ne pas pouvoir s’exprimer en français. Ce serait m’avancer mais on a l’impression que le marin a le mal du pays. Kessel reprendra la description des tireurs de pousse-pousse, car il est bon de le rappeler, ce moyen de locomotion est typique du Japon de cette époque.

Non, car heureusement, la vie de Julien VIAUD qui n’est pas encore Pierre LOTI, est elle-même un roman. En effet, l’auteur a beaucoup voyagé, et il aime le risque, qualité nécessaire à sa profession, mais qualité obligée pour qui chercherait à entretenir une relation avec une maîtresse en pays musulman. Er absolvierte die Schiffahrt-Schule. Seine ersten Reisen führten in durch das Mittelmeer, nach Senegal und in die USA. Er begann sehr früh sein Tagebuch zu führen und behielt diese Gewohnheit bis 1918 bei. 1872 verbrachte er mehrere Monate in Tahiti. Er zeichnete und malte Aquarelle. Schließlich schrieb er durch seine dortigen Erfahrungen inspiriert Le Mariage de Loti Die Jahr 1876 und 1877 verbrachte er in der Türkei, die in neben Polynesien am stärksten geprägt hat. Daraus ging Ayizadé (1879) hervor. Es folgten die Romane Mon frère Yves Pêcheurs d'Islande Madame Chrysantème (1887) und schließlich Ramuntcho 1891 wurde er Mitglied der Académie Francaise. Er verfasste auch zahlreiche Reiseberichte über die Wüste, Indien, Persien, Jerusalem, Nordafrika... Les derniers jours de Pékin (Die letzten Tage von Peking) beschreibt die Ereignisse um den Boxeraufstand und fand nach 1900 weite Verbreitung. Nach seinem Tod 1923 veröffentlichte sein Sohn Samuel große Teile des Tagebuchs, das als Grundlage seiner Bücher gedient hatte.
