Longfellow regretfully declines an offer to speak at the Portsmouth Lyceum, an engagement he could not keep without "much inconvenience to myself." He thanks the Board for the honor of the invitation. Longfellow's early poetry drew on his travels in Europe where he was influenced by German Romanticism; he held a professorship at Harvard as head of modern languages for 18 years. With the publication of works like "The Wreck of the Hesperus" (1841), Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), and "Paul Revere's Ride" (1863), Longfellow's popularity was assured in American and abroad; he also translated the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, and in 1884 he was the first American to be commemorated with a memorial bust in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Biography Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, and educated at Bowdoin College. Though his father hoped his son would become a lawyer, Longfellow proved such an excellent student of languages that Bowdoin hired him as its first professor of modern languages. In 1836 he moved to Harvard, where he taught European literatures of many different periods and created an important anthology, The Poets and Poetry of Europe (1845), that helped make European poetry accessible to the general American public. In his own poetry, Longfellow followed the examples of these European styles, transforming classical Greek or Finnish folk meters into his own truly American creations. Longfellow's second wife, Fanny Appleton, was a Boston heiress whose money allowed the couple to live in relative sumptuousness. When Fanny was fatally burned in 1861, Longfellow turned in his despair to translating Dante's Divine Comedy . At his death, Longfellow was the most popular and beloved poet of his time. Explorations By the middle of the nineteenth century, Longfellow was one of the most popular poets writing in English; but as a professor, a scholar, and an American "bard" in an

Oft have I seen at some cathedral door
A laborer, pausing in the dust and heat,
Lay down his burden, and with reverent feet
Enter, and cross himself, and on the floor
Kneel to repeat his paternoster o'er;
Far off the noises of the world retreat;
The loud vociferations of the street
Become an undistinguishable roar.
So, as I enter here from day to day,
And leave my burden at this minster gate, To Sonnet in the Glossary Alphabetic Page Version Entire Glossary Version To Petrarchan Sonnet in the Glossary Alphabetic Page Version Entire Glossary Version Kneeling in prayer, and not ashamed to pray, The tumult of the time disconsolate To inarticulate murmurs dies away, While the eternal ages watch and wait.

http://www.nationalcenter.org/PaulRevere'sRide.html
The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Written April 19, 1860; first published in 1863 as part of "Tales of a Wayside Inn" Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year. He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country folk to be up and to arm." Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore, Just as the moon rose over the bay, Where swinging wide at her moorings lay The Somerset, British man-of-war; A phantom ship, with each mast and spar Across the moon like a prison bar, And a huge black hulk, that was magnified By its own reflection in the tide.

Quotes of the Day for 27 February 2005 - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born at Portland, Maine on this day in 1807. Yesterday we looked at Victor Hugo, France's favorite poet, for a long time Longfellow was America's favorite. He seemed to easily create rhyme and rhythm in poetry that makes his work both readable and memorable. He was one of the first poets to address American themes, and at a time when the new nation was ready to move on from the initial struggle to carve a civilization out of the wilderness, America was ready for some culture. A torn jacket is soon mended; but hard words bruise the heart of a child. If you would hit the mark, you must aim a little above it; every arrow that flies feels the attraction of earth. The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well, and doing well whatever you do without thought of fame. If it comes at all it will come because it is deserved, not because it is sought after. Trouble is the next best thing to enjoyment. There is no fate in the world so horrible as to have no share in either its joys or sorrows.
