Longfellow's works ranged from sentimental pieces such as 'The Village Blacksmith' to translations of Dante. Among his most interesting works are EVANGELINE (1847), a narrative poem of the former French colony of Acadia, echoing such epics as Homer's Odyssey , and THE SONG OF HIAWATHA (1855), especially noted for its sing-song meter and shamanistic rhythm. Among his most remembered works are Evangeline The Song Of Hiawatha (1855) and The Courtship of Miles Standish Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. His father, Stephen Longfellow, was a Portland lawyer and congressman, and mother Zilpah, was a descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower. Longfellow was fond of reading and at thirteen he wrote his first poem, "The Battle of Lovell's Pond," which appeared in the Portland Gazette Longfellow's translation of Horace earned him a scholarship for further studies. After graduating in 1825 he traveled in Italy, France and Spain from 1826 to 1829, and returned to the United States to work as a professor and librarian in Bodwoin. He translated for his students a French grammar, and edited a collection of French proverbs and a small Spanish reader. In 1831 he married Mary Storer Potter, and made with her another journey to Europe, where he studied Swedish, Danish, Finnish, and the Dutch language and literature. On this trip he fell under the influence of German Romanticism. Longfellow's wife died at Rotterdam in 1835.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) Contributing Editor: Allison Heisch Classroom Issues and Strategies If students have encountered Longfellow before taking a college course, the poems they know are not in this anthology: Evangeline The Song of Hiawatha The Courtship of Miles Standish . The Longfellow of this anthology is our late twentieth-century "revisionist" Longfellow, and except in poems such as "A Psalm of Life," he is almost unrecognizable as a writer who might have written those famous poems. If students have not actually read Longfellow, but merely heard of him (the typical case), they want to know why he's so famous. Longfellow is accessible, and the fact is that in almost any class there will be students who adore "A Psalm of Life" and students who cannot stand it. Such a division, of course, presents the teacher with an ideal point of departure. Although Longfellow is now very unfashionable, he is nevertheless an excellent vehicle for teaching about poetry either to the unlimited or the turned-off. Oddly enough, students in general respond to the story of his life almost more readily than to his poetry. That, therefore, is a good place to begin. They often ask about his fame. The most popular poet of his day and the first American poet to make an adequate living at his profession, Longfellow is now largely dismissed as a writer of little depth, whose work was rendered artificial and sentimental by his alliance with the privileged society of Victorian Boston and Cambridge. A professor of modern European languages first at Bowdoin College in his native Maine and, after 1836, at Harvard, he established himself as a lyric poet with Voices of the Night (1839), which contains one of his most famous poems, "The Psalm of Life." This volume was followed by Ballads and Other Poems (1841), which includes such well-known works as "The Wreck of the Hesperus," "The Skeleton in Armor," "The Village Blacksmith," and "Excelsior." His Poems on Slavery (1842), a nod to the antislavery movement prompted by his liberal Unitarian values, was dedicated to William Ellery Channing. For the most part, however, unlike John Greenleaf Whittier, he kept his poetical vocation separate from matters of conscience and wrote most often and compellingly on nostalgic and picturesque themes. Extremely popular in the United States in his lifetime, his works include The Song of Hiawatha (1855) and a translation (1865–1867) of Dante's The Divine Comedy. Encyclopedia Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth, 1807–82, American poet, b. Portland, Maine, grad. Bowdoin College, 1825. He wrote some of the most popular poems in American literature, in which he created a new body of romantic American legends. Descended from an established New England family, after college he spent the next three years in Europe, preparing himself for a professorship of modern languages at Bowdoin, where he taught from 1829 to 1835. After the death of his young wife in 1835, Longfellow traveled again to Europe, where he met Frances Appleton, who was to become his second wife after a long courtship. She was the model for the heroine of his prose romance, Hyperion (1839). From 1836 to 1854, Longfellow was professor of modern languages at Harvard, and during these years he became one of an intellectual triumvirate that included Oliver Wendell Holmes and James Russell Lowell.
