      Lane Library History
      • Home This history was written by Helen Fentress, Lane Library Librarian from 1943-1947 and 1949-1950. Armstrong's library has come a long way since 1935 when the college first opened its doors as Armstrong Junior College on the corner of Bull and Gaston Streets in downtown Savannah. And everyone gave books! The initial collection of only about 4500 volumes, many of them donated, was quickly added to by purchases of works requested by the faculty to support the curriculum; and the hard-working librarian herself kept the library open 13 hours every day except Sunday, and then took books home to catalog. A few student assistants worked for small pay ($.30 and hour, or $3.00 a week). These were still the pre-war days of the Great Depression. Mrs. Miller remembers one incident where one of her student assistants who badly needed a pair of shoes, nonetheless spent his first paycheck to take a girl out on a date. What makes this a poignant memory for here is that this boy was not tool long afterwards lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea. In the first ten years of its existence, the library grew to not many more than 6,000 volumes, and had a series of four librarians in three locations. Mrs. Miller's two-year stint as librarian was followed by the four-year tenure of Mill Lulie Henderson. During its first six years the library remained on the first floor of the Armstrong Building, but in 1942 Miss Mary Elizabeth Mayo came from Virginia to be librarian, and the library, needing larger quarters, was moved to the third floor which had formerly been the ballroom of the home. This move provided not only more spacious quarters within, but added the use of the large balcony which ran the length of the building, affording a marvelous view of Bull Street and Forsyth Park, and of course room in which students could study while enjoying the sunshine.

And then there was all that scientific writing-on spiders. With major articles in Silliman's Journal, the Journal of the Philadelphia Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Boston Journal of Natural History, Nicholas Hentz, it turns out, was one of the nineteenth century's foremost American arachnologists. A whole series of his writings was published between 1842 and 1847, with extraordinary color illustrations from Hentz's own hand. After his death, his scientific reputation lived on throughout his own century and into the next. In 1875 the Boston Society of Natural History saw fit to republish all of Hentz's work under the title Spiders of the United States, terming it a "pioneer" study in the field. And as late as 1932, on the basis of his achievements as a scientist as well as an illustrator and engraver, he again proved worthy of a scholarly monograph from the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society.

    American social activist and writer
"Women are human beings as much as men, by nature; and as women, are even more sympathetic with human processes. To develop human life in its true powers we need fully equal citizenship for women."
    Introduction
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a prominent social activist and leading theorist of the women's movement at the turn of the twentieth century. She examined the role of women in society and put forth her social theories in Women and Economics and other nonfiction books, while she developed her feminist ideals in her novels and short stories. Gilman is best known today for her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," in which she portrayed a young woman's mental breakdown based on her own experience. Believing society could be changed for the better for women through the use of reason, she wrote books to advance her ideas.

Helen Lamb: Some insight into her life and times Part 2* Allan J. Schwartz, CRNA, DDS

Columbia, Missouri This is Part 2 of a 2-part "Imagining in Time" column. Part 1 was published in the April 2003 AANA Journal
Key words: Anesthesia history, Barnes Hospital School of Anesthesia, biography, Helen Lamb.
    First successful total pneumonectomy
James Gilmore, a physician from Pittsburgh, Pa, was admitted to the surgical service of Barnes Hospital, St Louis, Mo, on April 4, 1933. He was accompanied with his lifelong friend, Sidney A. Chalfont, MD. Gilmore’s operative permit read: “I herewith request the performance of the required operation and such additional work as may be found necessary or advisable at the time.” The operation was to be an upper left lobe lobectomy. The preoperative orders left that day were for a “routine prep for a lobectomy ‘L,’ morphine 0.15 gm @ 9 a.m., atropine 0.0004 gm @ 9 a.m., to OR when called in bed, temperature, pulse, respiration (TPR) q4h, bedrest with bathroom privileges, tub bath, light diet.” The next day Gilmore arrived in the operating room shortly after 9 am . Helen Lamb recorded his vital signs as blood pressure 98/72, pulse 84, and respirations 20. Anesthesia was begun by mask at 9:35

Relief of Pain and Suffering The twentieth century saw physicians and pharmacologists seeking better drugs to alleviate pain. In 1929, the National Research Council launched a forty-year drive to develop an analgesic stronger than aspirin but without the addiction potential of narcotics . More than 500 compounds were developed, several of which appeared to induce analgesia in animals. How could these be tested in humans?
    Measuring Pain in Experimental Subjects
At Cornell University , physiologist James Hardy , neurologist Herbert Wolff , and researcher Helen Goodell used very precisely calibrated radiant heat stimuli directed to the foreheads or hands of trained experimental subjects. They asked the subjects to report each "just noticeable difference" in the intensity of pain experienced, and graphed their responses on the "dol" scale , in which one dol equals two just noticeable differences, or " jnds ". Their method produced very elegant graphs showing the comparative effectiveness of various analgesics , and the physiologic responses associated with different intensities of pain.
