A Bio-bibliographical note about Jack London
"Jack London was born in 1876 and reared by an itinerant family in Oakland. He left school at fourteen and in 1893 joined a sealing cruise which took him as far as Japan. He tramped around the USA and Canada and he studied for a term at the University of California before joining the goldrush to the Klondike, where he made an unsuccessful attempt at mining. Stricken with scurvy he returned to Oakland and began to write about his experiences. He completed several volumes of short stories, many novels and two collections of essays. Jack London died in 1916." Source: Penguin Web Site (http://www.futurenet.co.uk/Penguin/Authors/1233.html). Accessed 17 February 1997.

At their best, his works are powerful and moving narratives. Jack London, in full John Griffith London, was born in San Francisco, the illegitimate son of a wandering astrologer and a spiritualist. At the age of 14 he quit school to seek adventure. As a sailor, he pirated San Francisco Bay oyster beds; then, aboard a sealing ship, he cruised to Japan. Later, as a tramp, he saw much of the United States and the interior of a Niagara Falls jail. He completed his high school education in a year and went to the University of California for a semester. He traveled to the Klondike with the gold prospectors and, returning to California, launched his writing career.

CHAPTER I
    It all
    came to me
    one election day.
    It was
    on a warm California afternoon,
    and I
    had ridden
down into the Valley of the Moon from the ranch to the little village to vote Yes and No to a host of proposed amendments to the Constitution of the State of California. Because of the warmth of the day I had had several drinks before casting my ballot, and divers drinks after casting it. Then I had ridden up through the vine-clad hills and rolling pastures of the ranch, and arrived at the farm -house in time for another drink and supper. "How did you vote on the suffrage amendment?" Charmian asked. "I voted for it." She uttered an exclamation of surprise For, be it known, in my younger days, despite my ardent democracy, I had been opposed to woman suffrage. In my later and more tolerant years I had been unenthusiastic in my acceptance of it as an inevitable social phenomenon. "Now just why did you vote for it?"
