Biography of Jack London (1876-1916)
Jack London Jack London ClassicNote on Jack London Biography of Jack London Jack London embodied all the harshness and tragedy of his naturalism writing style. His life seems to have been recollected in a mostly bitter tone. The roots of his unhappy life initially sprung from the problems of his parents. His mother, Flora, had started off on the path to happiness. She was stricken with typhoid fever that not only ruined her looks but damaged her eyesight and stunted her growth. She lost her hair and wore a wig for the rest of her life, as well as a size twelve child's shoe. When Jack was eight, Eliza married a boarder in her family's home. Captain Shepard moved her and his three children to another part of Oakland. Jack was devastated. A few months later, an epidemic wiped out John's chicken coops. Discarding dreams of a successful farm, the London family also moved back to Oakland. Jack was delighted, once again proximate to Eliza and Mammie Jennie, to whom he was still very close. In the streets he learned how to fight bullies on his way to school. He was not strong, but he garnered a reputation for cunning ability to brawl. At aged fourteen, Jack graduated from grammar school. Because his family could not afford to send him to high school, he went to work at a canning factory. Fortunately, his rigorous childhood had developed a muscular physique. His childhood was a lonely one, supplemented by books from the local librarian, the first person of culture to enter Jack's life.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
I explore the way in which the class divisions of society, demarcated by "The Slot," create divisions in an individual's consciousness. This will open up a way to discuss "South of the Slot," particularly if students have themselves experienced a self divided between two (or more) cultures. I have found that foreign students and working-class students have very strong, positive responses to London's stories of the hazards of cultural mobility.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
The double is a familiar theme in American literature, but London gives it a new twist by exploring it in class as well as psychological terms. London's politics were shaped in the 1890s by the depression, labor disputes, and the Socialist Labor Party. During the same period he also determined that he would become a writer, motivated in part by his fear of slipping into the underclass, which he called "the Social Pit." London struggled to reconcile his radical, working-class identity with that of his middle-class, literary self. His satirical portrait of Freddie Drummond distances him from a self he might have become.

  • Born: 12 January 1876 Birthplace: San Francisco, California Died: 22 November 1916 (uremic poisoning) Best Known As: Author of Call of the Wild
Jack London was an early 20th-century writer closely associated with San Francisco and adventure. His most famous book by far is The Call of the Wild (1903), the story of a peaceful California dog named Buck who is kidnapped and shipped to the wilds of Alaska. The Sea-Wolf (1904) and White Fang (1906) also were major hits. London was famous in his day for his dashing lifestyle: among other things he designed and built his own ship, the Snark , and sailed it to the South Pacific. He also was known (much like Stephen King ) for his steady and prodigious output of novels, articles and short stories. The author adopted the name of London from his step-father... A longstanding rumor has it that Jack London committed suicide, but evidence seems to indicate that he died of kidney failure combined with a possible overdose of morphine.

    12. Januar: Jack London (eigtl.
    ab 1891

    London wird wegen Landstreicherei verhaftet.
Januar: "To the Man on Trail" ist Londons erste veröffentlichte Kurzgeschichte.

      Jack London
Born John Griffiths London in San Francisco on January 12, 1876 of an unmarried mother, Flora Wellman. His father may have been William Chaney, a journalist, lawyer, and major figure in the development of American astrology. [ John Griffiths London by Dr. Clarice Stasz] By the time he was 29, he was internationally famous for Call of the Wild The Sea Wolf (1904), and other literary and journalistic accomplishments. He was divorced from Bessie (Maddern), his first wife and the mother of his two daughters, Joan and Little Bess, and he had married Charmian (Kittredge). Died November 22, 1916, of kidney disease at age 40. "It was at Union Square that I saw a man offering a thousand dollars for a team of horses." THE STORY OF AN EYEWITNESS By Jack London, Collier's special Correspondent "...His noted journalism included war correspondence, boxing stories, and the life of Molokai lepers. A committed socialist, he insisted against editorial pressures to write political essays and insert social criticism in his fiction." The Jack London Collection Jack London ascribed his literary success largely to hard work - to "dig," as he put it. He tried never to miss his early morning 1,000-word writing stint, and between 1900 and 1916 he completed over fifty books, including both fiction and non-fiction, hundreds of short stories, and numerous articles on a wide range of topics.
