Students Should Understand: The changing role of the United States in world affairs through World War I.
This lesson plan evaluates the United States debate concerning the Treaty of Versailles and its possible entry into the League of Nations. The teacher should also use Historical Thinking Standard 3 to understand the events that occurred at the end of World War I. Were the individuals and institutions involved acting out of self interest or principle and conviction? Additionally, how significant are the elements of chance and illness? HISTORICAL THINKING STANDARD 3: Analyze cause and effect relationships bearing in mind multiple causation, including: a) the importance of the individual in history; b) the influence of ideas, human interests, and beliefs; and c) the role of chance, the accidental, and the irrational. Motivation: Procedures: As students read the documents concerning Wilson, they should look for information and clues to help answer the following questions:

Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court. Lea corresponded with the following who were or later became mayors of Philadelphia: Rudolph Blankenburg (1843-1918); Edwin H. Fitler; Daniel M. Fox; Alexander Henry (1823-1883); W. S. Stokely, and John Weaver. Other prominent Philadelphians among his correspondents are: John J. Ridgway, Jr.; Joseph Wharton (1826-1909); William Sellers (1824-1905); Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912); and his father, the Rev. William H. Furness (1802-1896). Lea's papers are a source of information about the Wistar Association, open only to members of the American Philosophical Society, and the Wistar Party, of which Lea was dean for many years.

http://gurukul.american.edu/heintze/Boston.htm
A Chronology of Boston City Council Orators on the Fourth of July, 1783 to the Present
Introduction
This list of orations covers the years 1783 to the present. All of the orations cited herein were sponsored by the City Council of Boston and are commonly referred to as the "municipal orations." Note that these were not the only orations given in any specific year. Typically, two or more addresses were presented annually in Boston, some at meetings of patriotic associations, as well as other organizations. For example, on behalf of the Washington Society, Ashur Ware and Andrew Dunlap presented orations in 1816 and 1832, respectively. William Burdick addressed the Boston Franklin Association on July 5, 1802. In 1828 while Brandford Sumner was delivering his municipal oration in front of the governor of Massachusetts and other citizens, Joseph Hardy Prince was in Faneuil Hall at the Andrew "Jackson Celebration" there delivering his address and James D. Knowles was addressing the Baptist churches and societies in the Second Baptist Meeting House. This list is based in part on the compilations by C. W. Ernst who had his lists of Boston orators published as a series of appendixes to a number of orations beginning in 1894. The current list is more comprehensive, however, and includes full titles of orations and additional commentary on specific titles and publisher information. Almost all of the municipal orations were printed as pamphlets by the Boston City Council, making the city of Boston unique in this respect.
