DAVID LIVINGSTONE (1813-1873) David Livingstone was born on March 13, 1813 in Blantyre, Scotland, near Glasgow. He became a doctor and a missionary, and devoted much of his life to exploring Africa. He helped Europeans learn a lot about the continent of Africa. Livingstone was one of the first Europeans to explore the central and southern parts of Africa. He first went to Africa as a Christian missionary in 1841, when he was 27 years old. He decided that the best way to teach Africans about Christ was to move about and see as many people as he could. That is how he became an African explorer. He married Mary Moffat in 1845 and she (and later their children) came along with Livingstone on his early explorations. In 1849, he led a group of Europeans across the Kalahari Desert and discovered Lake Ngami. Two years later, he again travelled through the Kalahari with his family. He continued crossing the continent of Africa during three different time periods: 1852-56, 1858-64, and 1866-73. In 1856, he travelled on the Zambezi River, and became the first European to see the spectacular Victoria Falls. He also became the first European to cross the entire width of southern Africa.

LIVINGSTONE, DAVID The Lady Nyassa was taken to the Rovuma. Up this river Livingstone managed to steam 156 m., but farther progress was arrested by rocks. Returning to the Zambezi in the beginning of 1863, he found that the desolation caused by the slave trade was more horrible and widespread than ever. It was clear that the Portuguese officials were themselves at the bottom of the traffic. Kirk and Charles Livingstone being compelled to return to England on account of their health, the doctor resolved once more to visit the lake, and proceeded some distance up the west side and then north-west as far as the watershed that separates the Loangwa from the rivers that run into the lake. Meanwhile a letter was received from Earl Russell recalling the expedition by the end of the year. In the end of April 1864 Livingstone reached Zanzibar in the Lady Nyassa, and on the 23rd of July Livingstone arrived in England. He was naturally disappointed with the comparative failure of this expedition. Still the geographical results, though not in extent to be compared to those of his first and his final expeditions, were of high importance, as were those in various departments of science, and he had unknowingly laid the foundations of the British protectorate of Nyasaland. Details will be found in his Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and its Tributaries, published in 1865. Dr. David Livingstone
Due to an increase of nationalism and imperialism in the nineteenth century, many European countries were expanding their empires to other parts of the world.
As a result, the records of travels into new and distant lands were published in book form. Public interest surrounding exploration of foreign places created the demand for travelogues during this time. "I determined n e v e r to stop until I h a d come to the end and achieved m y purpose ~ David Livingstone Missionary and African explorer Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was born on this day in Blantyre, Scotland . With a passion for faith , hard work , and education , he earned a medical degree then joined the London Missionary Society in 1838. He arrived in Cape Town in 1841. With travels of nearly one-third of Africa's interior, the courageous explorer became the first European to cross the continent in an amazing trek from west to east coasts (1853-1856). "I will go anywhere as long as it is forward," he said. Crossing the difficult Kalahari desert, he discovered Lake Ngami in 1849 and the Zambezi River in 1851. In 1855, he discovered the great Victoria Falls, which the natives called "Smoke with Thunders." With characteristic patriotism , Livingstone christened the landmark for his queen. "I shall open up a path into the interior or perish," he said. Livingstone documented his experiences with the book Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857). By that
