67. VLA: History Of The Vachel Lindsay Association, Springfield, Illinois
Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (18791931) was known as the Prairie Troubadour. Early inhis career he made extensive walking tours of the country,
http://www.vachellindsay.org/vlaHistory.htm
VLA Historic Overview The Vachel Lindsay Association was founded in Springfield in December 1946, and incorporated in the State of Illinois on May 21, 1947. Its mission was to "stimulate interest in the significance of the life, writings, and ideals of the poet." Many of the organizers were people who had known Lindsay and were committed to preserving his legacy; the original advisory board for the association included Paul Angle, Langston Hughes, John Masefield, Carl Sandburg, and Louis Untermeyer. In the fifteen years that had passed since his death, most of the author's books had gone out of print, the home in Springfield where he was born and where he died in was in need of repair, and a world war had been fought. It was time, as one of the first members of the association asserted, to share Lindsay's humanist and healing vision with a new generation. When the Vachel Lindsay Association was founded it was supported by an Advisory Board that included Paul Angle, Langston Hughes, John Masefield, Carl Sandburg, and Louis Untermeyer. These leaders in letters lent their names and encouragement to a new organization out of their regard for Lindsay. From the time of its inception in 1946, the Lindsay Association was committed to promoting the poet's legacy, building a library collection of original letters and manuscripts, and preserving the Lindsay home in Springfield. In February 1947 the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra was contracted to give a performance in Springfield. The net proceeds from this event were donated to the Vachel Lindsay Association to give financial footing in its endeavors as a not-for-profit entity.

Hart Crane~ ABRAHAM LINCOLN WALKS AT MIDNIGHT
    by Vachel Lindsay
It is portentous, and a thing of state
That here at midnight, in our little town
A mourning figure walks, and will not rest,
Near the old court-house pacing up and down, Or by his homestead, or in shadowed yards
He lingers where his children used to play,
Or through the market, on the well-worn stones
He stalks until the dawn-stars burn away. A bronzed, lank man! His suit of ancient black, A famous high-top hat and plain worn shawl Make him the quaint great figure that men love, The prairie-lawyer, master of us all. He cannot sleep upon his hillside now. He is among us:as in times before! And we who toss and lie awake for long, Breathe deep, and start, to see him pass the door. His head is bowed. He thinks of men and kings. Yea, when the sick world cries, how can he sleep? Too many peasants fight, they know not why; Too many homesteads in black terror weep. The sins of all the war-lords burn his heart.
