Fishing For Creativity
Creative Perfumes To live in mankind is far more than to live in a name.
Authors and uncaptured criminals are the only people free from routine. "Life is a loom, weaving illusion." "I am unjust, but I can strive for justice.
My life's unkind, but I can vote for kindness.
I, the unloving, say life should be lovely.
I, that am blind, cry out against my blindness." "This is the sin against the Holy Ghost:
To speak of bloody power as right divine,
And call on God to guard each vile chief's house,
And for such chiefs, turn men to wolves and swine." Published Sources for the above Quotations:

University of Illinois at Springfield Web exhibit created by Thomas J. Wood and Sarah Kirsch, 1999-2000. Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born and died in the same house in Springfield, Illinois. Although he wrote verse from an early age, his initial aspiration was to be an artist. To this end, he attended the Chicago Art Insitute in 1901-1903 before moving to New York in 1903 to work for five years with the Art Students League. But he established his fame through his poetry, with vivid works designed for public recitation, such as "The Congo" and "General William Booth Enters into Heaven." The prairie town of Springfield was for Lindsay a symbol of agrarian utopia. In Lindsay's thought this small city, bordered on all sides by farmland, stood in opposition to the mean commerical meccas of Chicago and New York. Lindsay dreamed of a future Springfield transformed by the love of beauty and the democratic spirit of Lincoln, leading the world to a "spirit-dawn." In 1912 Lindsay made a cross-country "tramp" on foot from Illinois to New Mexico, during which he lived off his art (supplemented by physical labor), trading copies of his poetry and drawings for food and shelter: "rhymes to be traded for bread." "The Village Improvement Parade" is an example of the works he distributed during his "tramps."

My influences included William Blake Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born on November 10, 1879 in Springfield, Illinois. The second of six children and the only son of Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Esther Catharine Frazee Lindsay. Vachel did not attend school until he was eight. He was taught at home by his mother, who had been a teacher and artist before her marriage. Grimm’s Fairy Tales is said to have been his primer. He graduated from Stuart School in 1893, having skipped the seventh grade and winning several prizes for his writing compositions.
During his youth, Vachel was encouraged to follow in his father’s footsteps, therefore as a dutiful son, he enrolled at Hiram College, as a premedical student in 1897. Three years later, he wrote home and asked his parents to allow him to attend art school. In 1901 he was accepted as a student at the Art Institute of Chicago and began his pursuit of a career as an illustrator. He spent time reading the works of English mystic poet William Blake and writing poetry in earnest.

The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark is a two-story, twelve-room house where the poet Lindsay was born in 1879 and died in 1931. The land where the house sits was purchased in 1824, eight years before the town of Springfield was incorporated. A simple structure, it was built circa 1850 by Henry Dresser, who also designed and built the home Abraham Lincoln and his family resided in during their time in Springfield.
In 1990, the transfer took place and the Vachel Lindsay House became a state-owned historic site under the auspices of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The house remained open for a short time before it was closed again for evaluation and restoration.
Born Nicholas Vachel Lindsay on November 10, 1879 in Springfield, Illinois, he was the second of six children and the only son of Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Esther Catharine Frazee Lindsay. His physician father and mother were devout Christians, members of the First Christian Church in Springfield where Dr. Lindsay was an elder and Mrs. Lindsay taught the adult Sunday School class.

Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, Ill. He studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the New York School of Art. He lived as a modern-day troubadour, selling poems and drawings as he traveled. His Swedenborgian religious background was strengthened by his personal rediscovery of the 18th-century Swedish mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. Many of Lindsay's poems echo the work of the English poet William Blake, in diction and theme, particularly the poems about children, poor people, and the immanence of divinity. Lindsay's literary "litany of heroes" included American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. Lindsay's poetry exuded patriotic and democratic exuberance and optimism.
