BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE The Joseph C. Lincoln papers give you a glimpse of a writer who gained great popularity in the early 20th century. Described by his son as "short, fat, laughing, and infinitely friendly", this aptly describes an author who spiced his popular stories with humor, verse and color. Joseph C. Lincoln (1870-1944) was the son of Joseph and Emily Lincoln of Brewster. His father was a Cape Cod sea captain who died when Joseph was 10 months old (see Henry C. Kittredge Maritime Collection: Captain Joseph Lincoln Papers). He grew up on Cape Cod until moving to Chelsea, Mass. as a teenager, spending his summers on the Cape. His ancestors on both sides of the family had settled on Cape Cod in the mid 17th century. The family history greatly influenced his writings about things and people he knew and liked the best. In his own words, "I like the Cape marshes with their different greens and the cranberry bogs with their lavender shades. There is a serenity of life there and a friendliness that is nurtured by the peaceful surroundings. I love Cape Cod."

BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Lincoln, Joseph Crosby (Feb. 13, 1870 - Mar. 10, 1944), novelist, was born in Brewster, Mass., on Cape Cod, the only child of Joseph and Emily (Crosby) Lincoln. His ancestors on both sides of the family had settled on Cape Cod in the mid-seventeenth century; his father, like his grandfather and uncles, was a sea captain. When Joseph was about a year old his father died, and the boy grew up in the home of his maternal grandmother. He was allowed to roam the Cape at will and thus acquired an intimate knowledge of its distinctive culture and became familiar with the idiom, thrifty ways, and understated humor of its people. Joseph received his early education at the local school and when about twelve moved with his mother to Chelsea, Mass. (near Boston), where he attended high school, returning to the Cape each summer. After finishing his schooling he held various jobs, as office boy and bookkeeper in the Boston area and as clerk in a brokerage firm in Brooklyn, N. Y. For a time he studied art with the Boston illustrator Henry Sandham [ q.v.

Dave is still flying the revolutionary New England flag, 'cause he likes flags and history and free speech, and still doesn't like that fascist flag-burning Constitutional amendment, flag worship, or the way the militarists and theocrats have hijacked the official American flag, not to mention the government.

Joseph C. Lincoln (1870-1944) I seem to have the most extensive site dedicated to Cape Cod author Joseph Crosby Lincoln on the web, plus reviews of some of his books, and links to free on-line editions. 19th century Cape Cod I've also begun collecting 19th century stories with Cape Cod characters, and magazine descriptions of the Cape, Massachusetts, New England and their denizens. Authors have been writing stories about quaint Cape Cod customs and speech for a long time. Included there is the complete Nason and Varney's The Massachusetts Gazetteer published in 1890. This is a county by county and town by town description of people, industries and geography, with a long overview of the whole commonwealth.

June 16 Can anyone tell me something about the following titles? Some are from the Nautical Fiction List, but lack descriptions or have inadequate ones, others are waiting for a description so they can go into the list, they may not even be nautical or fiction. I try hard not to put anything into the list without a description of some sort, though of course I'm quite imperfect in that regard. Send replies to: jkohnen@boat-links.com Thanks!
