This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. Born to impoverished parents in backwoods Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln rose to become the sixteenth president of the United States. His remarkable story of success, his achievements in guiding the country through the Civil War, and his tragic death have afforded him iconic stature within the annals of American history and made him a hero to many. Lincoln had little formal schooling and was mostly self-educated, eventually training himself in the law. After setting up a successful legal practice in Illinois, he became interested in politics and was elected first to the state legislature and later to the U.S. Congress in 1846.
Lincoln's extraordinary skills as a writer and orator were crucial to his political successes and his ability to lead the country effectively through the war. In the early speeches of his career, he worked to connect with the "common man" in the audience, employing a clear, almost legalistic, logic and a satirical sense of humor. As he grew in confidence as a statesman, his speeches retained their clarity but became more powerful and resonant, often drawing upon biblical references and even the cadences of biblical prose. By turning to Christian rhetoric, Lincoln tried to unite the bitterly divided American populace and to garner popular support for a war that turned out to be longer and bloodier than anyone had anticipated. Since Lincoln's tragic assassination one month into his second term in office in 1865, his speeches have come to be revered as enduring expressions of formative American cultural ideals.

Thu Dec 16 14:00:36 CET 2004 http://www.loc.gov/z3950/lcserver.html I have been sending test queries to the Library of Congress Z39.50 server to try to learn more about PQF notation. I'm running into trouble with subject headings that contain hyphens. For example, I've tried searching for the subject term "Lincoln, Abraham1809-1865" using the following syntax: @attr 1=21 @attr 3=1 "Lincoln, Abraham1809-1865" This works fine, and I get hits back. It also works with the position attribute set to 3: @attr 1=21 @attr 3=3 "Lincoln, Abraham1809-1865" But if I try to AND this term with another term, it doesn't work. In this example I'm trying to AND the Lincoln term with an "ANY" search for "bibliography":

Thu Dec 16 17:37:31 CET 2004 Many thanks for clarifying these points! I have two other search questions: 1. How can I search on Voyager for books published within a range of years? I can search for a single year using, for example, @attr 1=31 1998. I have looked everywhere and concluded that this feature is not supported by Voyager. Is this correct? As a fallback, I could search by brute force for each individual year in a desired range. 2. How can I browse books within plus or minus, say, 10 numbers of a given LCCN number? I'm trying to "browse the shelves", so to speak. I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about doing this. You could "browse the shelves" by using a left-anchored/right truncated LC call number search, but the result sets will be very large at times. You could also retrieve groups using LCCN and leaving off the final digit. Examples: Z> f @attr 1=16 @attr 3=1 @attr 5=1 "ML410.B2" Sent searchRequest. Received SearchResponse. Search was a success. Abraham Lincoln 16.º Presidente dos Estados Unidos da América. Preservou a União durante a Guerra Civil tendo conseguido a emancipação dos escravos. Nasceu perto de Hodgenville, Kentucky, nos E.U.A. em 12 de Fevereiro de 1809;

ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865)
Autographed edition of A Proclamation , known as the "Emancipation Proclamation," (Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, ca. June 6, 1864), signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward. A Proclamation, known as the "Emancipation Proclamation." [Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, ca. June 6,1864]. Broadside. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln granted freedom to all slaves in states then in rebellion, with the exception of Tennessee, southern Louisiana, and parts of Virginia. As stated in the body of the text, the proclamation was a war measure based on the president's prerogatives as commander- in-chief in times of armed rebellion. Despite its intent as a war tactic and the exclusion of various states and parts of states, the president's proclamation nevertheless stands as a milestone in the ending of all slavery in the United States and as an expression of the freedom embodied in the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Although personally opposed to the institution of slavery, Lincoln had resisted any direct action against it for fear of encouraging the border states to secede, his first priority in the conflict being the maintenance of the Union rather than the abolition of slavery. By the summer of 1862, however, the president could no longer ignore emancipation as a tactical maneuver against rebellion, and decided to act. Lincoln wrote the first draft of the preliminary proclamation in June 1862, but did not publish it until after the pivotal Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862). This document, known as the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, was issued to the public on September nnouncing the intention to free slaves within the period of 100 days.

Gettysburg Address Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. He was our president during the Civil War. Almost entirely self-educated, he worked as a lawyer and a representative before running for president in 1860. His win, with a minority of the popular vote, set off the avalanche of successions of the Southern States from the Union. Therefore, preserving the Union became Lincoln's main thrust during his term in office. His passion for the Union is evident in the short eloquent speech he delivered at the site of the battle of Gettysburg, called the Gettysburg Address But the Union was not Lincoln's only concern. A year earlier, he had signed the Emancipation Proclamation , which legally freed the slaves in the rebel states. Although his Proclamation is often regarded as a political tool which Lincoln used to throw more righteous force to the Union, and although the Proclamation did not immediately break many bonds of slavery, it is representative of Lincoln's fierce personal abhorrence of the practice of slavery. "Slavery is founded on the selfishness of man's nature-opposition to it on his love of justice. These principles are in eternal antagonism; and when brought into collision so fiercely as slavery extension brings them, shocks and throes and convulsions must ceaselessly follow." Abraham Lincoln, 16 Oct. 1854, Peoria, Ill., during a debate with Stephen Douglas.

Abraham Lincoln
Sixteenth President (1861-1865)
Today Abraham Lincoln is universally regarded as one of the greatest Presidents ever. But through much of his administration, he seemed destined for a much less exalted ranking. Entrusted with guiding the nation through civil war, he was beset from the start with criticism from all sides. Some charged him with moral cowardice for initially insisting that an end to slavery was not one of his wartime goals; others accused him of overstepping his constitutional powers; still others blamed him for military reverses in the field. But as Union forces moved toward victory, Lincoln's eloquent articulation of the nation's ideals and his eventual call for an end to slavery gradually invested him with a saintly grandeur. Following his assassination in 1865, that grandeur became virtually unassailable. The original version of this portrait served as a template for artist George P. A. Healy's large painting, The Peacemakers, depicting Lincoln in consultation with three of his main military advisers at the end of the Civil War. But Healy recognized that the template made for a fine portrait in its own right. Eventually he did three replicas of it, including this one, commissioned by Lincoln's friend Elihu Washburne, and another one, once owned by Lincoln's son Robert, which hangs today in the White House.
George P. A. Healy (1813-1894)
