PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN
THE INFORMATION AGE
If Andrew Carnegie came back to tour the nation's 8,929 public libraries, he would observe the following:
  • Users of all ages exploring not only books, but small discs called "CDs," double reels called "videos," and something called "the Internet";
  • Library rooms filled with pre-schoolers at day care and adults in continuing education classes;
  • He'd find a select group of high school students spending up to 14 hours a week learning "information literacy skills";
  • And in his beloved city of Pittsburgh, he'd see a program designed to enhance school curricula through a "cybertour" of city neighborhoods.
At each of his stops, the journalist in Andrew Carnegie would prompt him to ask for the local newspaper. Among the stories he might find are the following:
  • A recent report that half of America's youth are at risk of not entering the mainstream of American life;
  • An alarmingly high drop-out rate of high school students in inner cities;
  • Continued violence among urban youth;
  • A segment of America which can afford online services, numerous entertainment options, and a variety of new phone services; and another segment which is forced to choose between basic telephone service and cable, or neither;

US Library of Congress Releases Encoded Archival Description DTD Version 2002. A posting from Randall K. Barry (U.S. Library of Congress) announces the release of the EAD DTD Version 2002. The Encoded Archival Description (EAD) standard is used by digital libraries to create machine-readable finding aids. Archival finding aids are "descriptive bibliography or metadata tools which take the form of inventories, registers, indexes, guides, and similar resources created by museums, libraries, repositories, and other kinds of archives." The Version 2002 EAD DTD "is designed to function as both an SGML and XML DTD. It conforms to SGML/XML specifications and has been thoroughly tested using a wide variety of existing SGML/XML software. To be used as an XML DTD, 'switches' have been included in the DTD for turning off features used only in SGML applications, and turning on features used in XML applications." Complete documentation for use of the EAD DTD is provided in the form of a Tag Library . The EAD DTD Version 2002 has been prepared by the Encoded Archival Description Working Group of the Society of American Archivists and the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress. The MARC Standards Office (NDMSO) acts as the maintenance agency for the EAD standard. At least 75 institutions are registered as users of the EAD DTD. Overview

Former Librarian of Congress Honored BY YVONNE FRENCH Photo by Paul Hogroian
“Dan’s writings lift the reader up to a higher standard and direct us outward to look at aspects of life that we may have overlooked before—or we may not have seen as part of history, law, language, folklore, advertising. … He saw the Library of Congress as a multimedia encyclopedia,” said current Librarian James H. Billington. “He comes as close as anyone living to being its encyclopedist. It is entirely fitting as our Bicentennial year draws to a close that we hail this eloquent contributor to, and statesman of, the world of the book.” Dr. Billington is the 13th Librarian of Congress; Dr. Boorstin was the 12th. Dr. Boorstin described the satisfaction he gained from writing the works included in the bibliography. “For me, the task of the historian is not to chisel a personal or definitive view of the past on granite. Rather, it is to see the iridescence of the past, fully aware that it will have a new and unsuspected iridescence in the future.” The event marked the publication by Greenwood Press of Daniel J. Boorstin: A Comprehensive and Selectively Annotated Bibliography

Welcome to the United States Code.
  • This version is generated from the most recent official version made available by the US House of Representatives. For exact information about the currency of any particular title as it is published by the House, see the listing on the House server . The date of any text appearing on this site appears in italics at the upper right in every Code section. Each section in the framed version is dated at the upper right corner of the text frame; these date the text itself as we receive it from the House, and are not the date on which we loaded the text. At this point we are not sure how often the House will issue new versions of this information to the public. Any new version issued by the House will in turn be mounted here within 24 hours. (This is not an absolute guarantee. From time to time, and without warning, the House makes changes in the format and structure of the text they make available for download. This can and does cause us to rewrite our own formatting software, hopefully with minimal delay.) In the meantime we suggest the use of the update feature available in each section. Our convenient update service (available onscreen as you look at each section) integrates the services of the House servers and of the Library of Congress Thomas service to supply you with accurate updates to any section which has changed.

From Several Divisions of the Library of Congress. Search by Keyword Subject Index Author Index Title Index Puerto Rico at the Dawn of the Modern Age: Nineteenth- and Early-Twentieth-Century Perspectives portrays the early history of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico through first-person accounts, political writings, and histories drawn from the Library of Congress's General Collections. Among the topics it highlights are the land and its resources, relations with Spain, the competition among political parties, reform efforts, and recollections by veterans of the Spanish-American War. The materials in the collection were published between 1831 and 1929 and consist of 39 political pamphlets, 13 monographs, and 1 journal. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Online version of the Library of Congress exhibition telling the story of the discovery and setting the scrolls in their historical context. Images and translations of scroll fragments.
http://lcweb.loc.gov/exhibits/scrolls/
The exhibition Scrolls From the Dead Sea: The Ancient Library of Qumran and Modern Scholarship brings before the American people a selection from the scrolls which have been the subject of intense public interest. Over the years questions have been raised about the scrolls' authenticity, about the people who hid them away during the period in which they lived, about the secrets the scrolls might reveal, and about the intentions of the scrolls' custodians in restricting access. The Library's exhibition describes the historical context of the scrolls and the Qumran community from whence they may have originated; it also relates the story of their discovery 2,000 years later. In addition, the exhibition encourages a better understanding of the challenges and complexities connected with scroll research. Exhibition Overview Credits Bibliography Glossary Introduction
