Comments Utterly fascinating. I find myself wishing you were still in academia and I had the time and money to pursue a PhD under your tutelage. Posted by: Scott D. Ideas are formulated and evaluated primarily on the basis of a persons reputation and the reputations of those they align themselves with. No?

122. Preservation (Library Of Congress FAQ)
Information on how to store, restore, display, and preserve books, photographs, and other materials.
http://lcweb.loc.gov/preserv/presfaq.html
Preservation
  • How should I store my books?
  • How should I display documents or works of art on paper?
  • Can I save wet books? What if my books are moldy?
  • How can I get rid of the smell of mildew in my books? ...
  • What If I have other questions about preservation of library and archives materials?
  • How should I store my books? Store books out of direct sunlight and where air can circulate freely. Store them away from windows and don't put them on shelves against outside walls. Store books on flat, smooth shelves that are strong enough to support their weight. Ideally, books should not be in contact with unsealed wood because it can release damaging acidic vapors. Line shelves with acid free board to prevent this problem. Stand books vertically side by side. Keep similar sizes together: small books next to small books, and large books next to large books. Use bookends to keep the books from falling over, and be sure they are high enough to support the books completely. Avoid storing books in an attic or basement because attics get too hot and basements get too damp. Both are also subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity levels. Keep books out from under plumbing and water pipes; water damage from these sources is all too common.

    DIGITAL COLLECTION
This digital collection illuminates specific moments in the history of Ohio's African-Americans and provides an overview of their experiences during the time period 1850 to 1920 in the words of the people that lived them. The story of the African-American Experience in Ohio 1850-1920 is more diverse and complex than this collection can adequately portray. All we can hope is to provide the researcher with a place to begin. The African-American Experience in Ohio 1850-1920 is a digital collection brought together from a number of individual sources specifically for this project. These sources include manuscript collections, newspaper articles, serials, photographs, and pamphlets. It was our intention to bring together as many diverse sources as possible to provide evidence of the diversity and complexity of African-American culture during this time period and to let those sources tell their own story without interpretation. First, some Russian sounds do not occur naturally in English. Second, Russian letters may change their pronunciation depending on their position in a word and, especially, on the place of stress. All of us at the Open World Leadership Center extend our deepest sympathy and concern to the communities and Open World host families in the areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. We would also like share some of the heartfelt words of condolence that we have received on their behalf from our network of alumni and friends abroad:
Together with you we sincerely sympathize with those who have been afflicted by the wild elements of nature.
Allow me to express our sympathy for this tragedy … In my heart, America will always be remembered as a country filled with people with open hearts and warm souls.
Luckily, my friends in Lake Charles [Louisiana]… survived. I wrote them letters and have received answers from all of them, and thank God, as we say in Russia … God Bless America and your families.

Open World would like to thank our alumni for thinking of our host families and friends in Louisiana and Mississippi during this difficult time.

How to Read Library of Congress Call Numbers
The Library of Congress Classification System
Books and journals are arranged on our shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. Using this system, each book or journal is assigned an alphanumeric call number based on its subject focus. This call number uniquely identifies the item and places it on our shelves near other material on the same subject. Each call number consists of several parts. For example, consider the call number:
    TK
The FIRST line, TK , defines the class and subclass. These letters specify a broad subject area. Within Class T for technology, TK represents the subclass electrical engineering. The SECOND line, , is the classification number. It should be read as a whole number with a decimal component to determine its location on the shelf. In combination with the class and subclass, the classification number defines the subject matter more finely. In this example, represents magnetic recording (a subdivision of TK The THIRD line
