Cooperative Acquisitions Program
The office in Jakarta (LC-Jakarta) manages the Cooperative Acquisitions Program (CAP) in order to acquire materials from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bunei on behalf of the Library of Congress and member institutions. Additional programs were started in Thailand Laos Vietnam , and the Philippines . Those programs are expected to be expanded by the year 2001. The goal of the program is to provide valuable research materials to participating academic institutions and public libraries on a cost-recovery basis. We collect materials in more than seven major languages about many different topics. The topics range from education, religion, anthropology, sociology, economics, government and politics, history and current events, geography and the environment, science and technology, literature, medicine, agriculture, to law. While the majority of the materials acquired are either serials or monographs, maps, non-print materials, and audio-visual materials are also collected.

The Library of Congress Comes Home
by Kendall Grant Clark
March 17, 2004
In the inaugural article (" Geeks and the Dijalog Lifestyle ") of my new XML.com column, Hacking the Library RSS feed Atom feed ), I offered a short tour of the territory I intend to explore with you, dear reader. It's a territory I call "dijalog", which stands for the confluence and intertwingling of the digital and the analog. If you're like me, you will never live the pure, weightless all-digital media lifestyle. Our media collections weren't born digital. While I presented dijalog last time as a characteristic of people with lifestyles like ours, it's more fundamental than that. Dijalog is really about correlating and managing the interplay between physical space and virtual space, which is accomplished by organizing, describing, and managing objects which exist in both of these spaces.

This publication was made possible by generous support from the James Madison Council, a national, private-sector advisory council dedicated to helping the Library of Congress share its unique resources with the nation and the world. John Y. Cole, a librarian and historian, began working at the Library of Congress in 1966. He has been director of the Center of the Book in the Library of Congress since it was established in 1977. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Margaret E. Wagner of the Library's Publishing Office in the preparation of this volume, which is dedicated to the memory of David C. Mearns, who served the Library from 1918 until he retired in 1967.

... An American Ballroom Companion presents a collection of over two hundred social dance manuals at the Library of Congress. The list begins with a rare late fifteenth-century source, Les basses danses de Marguerite d'Autriche (c.1490) and ends with Ella Gardner's 1929 Public dance halls, their regulation and place in the recreation of adolescents . Along with dance instruction manuals, this online presentation also includes a significant number of antidance manuals, histories, treatises on etiquette, and items from other conceptual categories . Many of the manuals also provide historical information on theatrical dance. All illuminate the manner in which people have joyfully expressed themselves as they dance for and with one another. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.
