LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADINGS
Using Library of Congress Subject Headings When you search the online catalog by subject , you must use a Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH). The library assigns subject headings to all items listed in the online catalog. This makes it easy to find books on the same or similar topics. Subject headings are listed in a five-volume manual called simply Library of Congress Subject Headings ("the big red books"). Sometimes you can guess the appropriate subject headings, but it's wise to check the manual to be sure. Reference librarians can help you, too. If you are searching for medical topics, use a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH). The MeSH manual is available at the Medical Center Library Keyword searching can provide

The library was originally housed in the Capitol, and most of its books were destroyed when the British shelled the building during the War of 1812. The major step in rebuilding the collection was taken in 1815, when Congress purchased the 6,000-volume personal library of Thomas Jefferson. With the purchase of the books of Dr. Otto H.F. Vollbehr in 1930, the library more than doubled the size of its collection of incunabula, which is now the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The main Library of Congress building was erected in 1897; the library also occupies the Thomas Jefferson building, formerly called the annex, and the new James Madison building. The post of Librarian of Congress, appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate, has often gone to eminent scholars and artists, as well as to professional librarians. Recent Librarians of Congress include Archibald MacLeish (1939-44), L. Quincy Mumford (1954-74), Daniel J. Boorstin (1974-87), and James H. Billington (1987- ).

The Blind Boys of Alabama Performance
    Wednesday, June 5, 2002

Fresh from their Grammy win, the Blind Boys of Alabama present a free, lunchtime gospel concert on the steps of the Library of Congress. The concert was co-sponsored by the American Folklife Center and the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage as part of "Homegrown 2002: The Music of America," and the Library's Music Division, as part of its major musical initiative, "I Hear America Singing."
The Blind Boys of Alabama formed as a group at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind thirty miles from Birmingham, Ala. in 1937, where the members were taught piano in Braille. They sang together whenever they could; sneaking out of the school grounds to entertain nearby soldier encampments based there during World War II.
