When is my work protected? Where can I get application forms? How long does it take to my certificate? How can I obtain copies of someone else's work and/or registration certificate? What is mandatory deposit? Do I have to register my work to be protected? To register a work, you need to submit a completed application form, a non-refundable filing fee of $30, and a non-returnable copy or copies of the work to be registered. Can I find out what is happening with my registration? May I register more than one work on the same application? Where do I list the titles? You may register unpublished works as a collection on one application with one title for the entire collection if certain conditions are met. It is not necessary to list the individual titles in your collection, although you may do so by completing a Continuation Sheet. Published works may only be registered as a collection if they were actually first published as a collection and if other requirements have been met. What is the difference between form PA and form SR?

Senate Considers a New Intellectual Property Organization
In his statement, Bruce Lehman emphasized support by the Administration for many of the reforms proposed by Senator Hatch. He stressed the fact that because the PTO relies on revenue from fees, there is a need for "operational flexibility" in order to serve the public in a more efficient manner. He also suggested that the reinvented office, which would be called "The United States Intellectual Property Organization," be a performance-based organization (as envisioned by Vice President Gore) in which it has "greater accountability and responsibility." Some members of the Committee, including Senator Thompson (R-TN) and Senator Simpson (R-WY), questioned the need for such reform and were highly skeptical. Senator Thompson stated that he wondered whether this was a solution in search of a problem. ARL, other members of the Shared Legal Capability, the Association of American Publishers, and the National Humanities Alliance sent a joint letter to the Committee that stated: Ann Doty , Research Assistant for Federal Relations ARL: A Bimonthly Newsletter of Research Library Issues and Actions 188 (October 1996). Newly Formed Group to Make Recommendations by Mid-2006 During the initial meeting, the Study Group members drafted a mission statement (see below) and discussed which issues to address and how to organize their work.  The group plans on convening for 1½ days every other month; the next meeting will be held June 9 in New York City. Laura E. Campbell, associate librarian for Strategic Initiatives, thanked the Study Group members for volunteering their time and expertise.  Campbell, who is also chief information officer for the Library of Congress, is leading a national initiative to collect and preserve important digital materials that are at risk of being lost.  The project, formally called the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) ( www.digitalpreservation.gov The Section 108 Study Group is co-chaired by Laura Gasaway, director of the law library and professor of law at the University of North Carolina, and Richard Rudick, former vice president and general counsel of John Wiley and Sons.  The 17 other members (see below) are from various interests and sectors and bring a broad range of perspectives to the group.  The Study Group was limited to 19 members to ensure efficiency and to meet the mid-2006 deadline for making recommendations.  The Study Group plans on holding sessions outside of its regular meetings for the public and press, and a Web site will be launched shortly to provide information on the work of this group to the public.

At the Library, a Stack of Choice Finds
By Dan Zak Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, August 5, 2005; Page C01 Michael Jordan wasn't much of a basketball player when he was 13. Well, he might've been, but certainly not in this 1977 footage of a junior high school game in Wilmington, N.C. It was shot on a camcorder from the bleachers of a gym, probably by another player's gung-ho parent. And His Airness is just another jerseyed youth popping airballs.
(By Lucian Perkins The Washington Post) "He makes one shot out of five, so he wasn't that great," says intern Marlena Brown, scrutinizing a DVD of the transferred footage in an oak-paneled room at the Library of Congress. Then there is Marilyn Monroe at a Los Angeles driving range in 1954, hacking at a golf ball with an iron. Then a grainy movie of her ceremonial appearance at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field for an all-star soccer match in 1957. After being escorted to the field by guards, Monroe primps, tugs at her tight pencil skirt and readies for the opening kick.

About half of the library’s collections of books and serial publications (newspapers, periodicals, and government documents) are in languages other than English, and more than 450 languages are represented.
