He replaced the traditionally romantic and complacent conception of American life with one that was realistic and even bitter. Lewis was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota, on February 7, 1885, and was educated at Yale University. From 1907 to 1916 he was a newspaper reporter and a literary editor. In Main Street (1920) Lewis first developed the theme that was to run through his most important work: the monotony, emotional frustration, and lack of spiritual and intellectual values in American middle-class life. His novel Babbitt (1922) mercilessly characterizes the small-town American businessman who conforms blindly to the materialistic social and ethical standards of his environment; the word “Babbitt,” designating a man of this type, has become part of the language. In 1921, when Sinclair Lewis's book Main Street was passed over for the Pulitzer Prize in favor of The Age of Innocence , he sent Edith Wharton a congratulatory letter expressing his admiration for her work. She responded warmly, saying that this was the "first sign I have ever had`literally'that `les Jeunes' at home had ever read a word of me." Although distressed that Lewis's book had been rejected because it had offended certain readers, she felt that his work had brought her hope: "Some sort of standard is emerging from the welter of cant and sentimentality, and if two or three of us are gathered together, I believe we can still save Fiction in America." Lewis and his wife came out to Saint-Brice-sous-Forˆt soon after this exchange of letters. His relationship with Wharton was cordial but not intimate. They saw each other intermittently for several years, and he dedicated his novel Babbitt to her. Sinclair Lewis 1885-1951

Lewis, Sinclair
The first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (Harry) Sinclair Lewis was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota, on February 7, 1885, and educated at Yale University. From 1907 to 1916 he was a newspaper reporter and a literary editor.
Lewis's early novels, Our Mr. Wrenn (1914), The Trail of the Hawk (1915), and Free Air (1919), were relatively undistinguished, as were some of his later ones. His first, and most important work, was Main Street, published in 1920. Main Street satirized the stupidities of small town life. The themes of the monotony, emotional frustration and lack of spiritual and intellectual values in American middle-class life would run through all of his later works. In the novels that followed Main Street he showed a keen ear for conversational crudites, a sound sense of the technical problems of making a living in the United States, a fine eye for the details of rooms and buildings that are found in America.
His novel Babbitt (1922) put a new word into the English language, a word to describe the typical go-getting salesman.Arrowsmith (1925) displayed the lack of scientific idealism somethimes found in the medical profession. Elmer Gantry (1927) lampooned an unscrupulous clergyman, and was based upon facts provided by the Rev. L.M. Birkhead. In Dodsworth (1929) Lewis depicted the egotistic, pretentious, married woman sometimes found in American upper-middle-class circles.

Sinclair Lewis
Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was born in the town of Sauk Center, Minnesota. He was graduated from Yale after several unhappy years there, and then became an editor and writer. His early writing was commercial and undistinguished. But when he published Main Street in 1920, he proved that he had become a very effective novelist. Main Street immediately captured America's attention, as did Scott Fitzgerald's very different This Side of Paradise , published in the same year. In his first important novel, Lewis established the methods and subject matter that would bring him world fame and eventually a Nobel Prize in Literature¡Xthe first American author to be so honored. That is, he described daily life in America with such a sharp eye and ear that readers could easily recognize it as part of their own experience. But he did it with such an emphasis on the comic and ridiculous that he made his readers laugh, in spite of themselves, at some of the silliness of their country. Like the noted satirists of the past, he wanted to reform the America he pictured by skillfully arousing his readers' sympathies for the non-conformist in a conformist society. The heroine of Main Street is a rebellious young woman who struggles hard to bring culture to her dead little town, and we feel a wry regret when in the end she decides to conform. However, Lewis' comic energy is so compelling that we cannot take her failure entirely seriously, though Sauk Center's inhabitants recognized themselves all too clearly at the time and took Lewis' lampooning so much to heart that it was years before the town could advertise itself to tourists as the model for
