I. Bibliographical And Biographical Sources II. Books on The Monk III. Book Chapters, Essays in Collections, and Sections of Books on ... XI. Related Studies and Lewis's Other Writings Since its first publication in March 1796, The Monk has never ceased to attract and repel readers or to enthrall and infuriate critics. Even its first audience sensed that The Monk was a new strain of Gothic novel whose lurid horrors, strident supernaturalism, satanic pomp, and sexually explicit episodes were merely a facade for the deeper cultural and political fears of a dying age of reason. The Monk 's first critics and reviewers, no doubt secretly excited by Lewis's violation of all artistic constraints, condemned the novel on grounds of immorality and salaciously bad taste but read The Monk enthusiastically and with clandestine enjoyment, as the famous Coleridge review of February 1797 clearly suggests.

The Monk , by Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818). Also known as Ambrosio, or the Monk Le Moine incestueux in French, which sort of gives away the ending). First published by Joseph Bell, London, March 12th, 1796. What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? I have even written out half of it fair. It is called The Monk , and I am myself so much pleased with it that, if the booksellers will not buy it, I shall publish it myself. A letter to Lewis' Mother
September 23rd, 1794 We really do not remember to have read a more interesting production. The stronger passions are finely delineated and exemplified in the progress of artful temptation working on self-sufficient pride, superstition, and lasciviousness. The author has availed himself of a German tradition which furnishes an episodical incident, awful, but improbable. The whole is very skilfully managed, and reflects high credit on the judgement and imagination of the writer. Some beautiful little ballads are interspersed, which indicate no common poetical talents. The Monthly Mirror

THE WORD OBEAH
What Does It Mean, How Does It Work?
the Wanderling
In and around the world of the supernatural, the occult, and the underground dark-eddies of things spiritual, there are mystics, shamans, tribal elders, wizards, sorcerers, spellcasters, diviners, necromancers, witches, and all other types and kinds of controllers and purveyors of occult abilities, drawing strength and operating in other dimensions along the edges of the conventional plane. In the realm of all those practitioners the most powerful, the most dreaded, and the most feared is the Obeah. In the first few sentences of the rather extensive paper OBEAH , by Azuth Kalafou and presented by the Wanderling , Kalafou writes: "The word Obeah or Obi is it self a word obscured and clouded in secrecy." What he is saying is, not only is the originating SOURCE of the word unclear or not fully known, it's obscurity mirrors precisely the mystery and secrecy of the phenomenom it is intended to represent.

51. F&M College Special Collections : Reynolds Family Papers
Lewis, MG 17751818. Tales of wonder; written and collected by MG Lewis In two volumes. New-York Printed by L. Nichols Co. for Samuel Campbell .
http://library.fandm.edu/archives/Reynolds.html
Reynolds Family Papers MS 6
Scope and Content
The collection consists of letters, diaries, scrapbooks, hand-drawn maps, clippings, photographs, transcripts, war communications and books. Some of the items were first assembled by members of the Reynolds family in the mid-1860s, with family ownership of the material being continuous up until the transfer of the collection to Franklin and Marshall College. It is the understanding of the department that items relating to the daughters of John and Lydia Moore Reynolds have been retained by the family. The earliest item in the collection dates from 1756 with the bulk of the material covering the period from 1830 - 1880 and consisting of mostly William Reynolds (1815 - 1879) and John Fulton Reynolds (1820-1863) items. Scrapbooks were compiled by Eleanor Reynolds. Books (monographs) that are included in the Reynolds Family Papers are probably from the personal library of James Lefevre Reynolds. These books are listed at the end of the manuscript collection inventory. The journals which William Reynolds wrote during the U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842 are available on microfilm. William's unofficial journals are also available in published format (abridged) as The Private Journal of William Reynolds edited by Nathaniel and Thomas Philbrick, New York: Penguin Books, 2004. An unabridged transcription of these journals is also available in electronic format. Letters written by William Reynolds to his family during the expedition and numbered 1-21 are available transcribed and published as
