Famous Quotes By: Lewis, C. S. 1898-1963 British Academic Writer Christian Apologist
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, Thy will be done, and those to whom God says, All right, then, have it your way.
Lewis, C. S.
Dedication

If we really think that home is elsewhere and that this life is a wandering to find home, why should we not look forward to the arrival?
Lewis, C. S.
Death and Dying

Much of the modern resistance to chastity comes from men's belief that they own their bodies those vast and perilous estates, pulsating with the energy that made the worlds, in which they find themselves without their consent and from which they are ejected at the pleasure of Another!
Lewis, C. S.
Chastity

It is hard to have patience with people who say There is no death or Death doesn't matter. There is death. And whatever is matters. And whatever happens has consequences, and it and they are irrevocable and irreversible. You might as well say that birth doesn't matter. Lewis, C. S. Death and Dying I believe in Christianity as I believe in the rising sun; not because I see it, but by it I can see all else. Lewis, C. S.

An unusual personal life A brilliant traditionalist Academically he was brilliant (far cleverer than Warnie), for many years a vigorous and charismatic English tutor at Magdalene college Oxford where he disliked his colleagues, and from 1954 a Professor of English at Cambridge where he was much happier. As he once described himself, I am tall, fat, bald, red-faced, double-chinned, black-haired and wear glasses for reading. He wore shabby tweeds, drank a lot of beer, could be loud, boorish and a bullying debater using techniques derived from his police-court-lawyer father. He was a private man who would not enquire about colleagues' personal lives and did not talk about his own. He thought it was nonsense to suppose that you had to understand an author in order to understand his work, calling this the "personal heresy". Very much a conservative and traditionalist, he held out against the teaching of nineteenth century English literature at Oxford as being too modern, could not stand T. S. Clive Staples Lewis ("Jack" Lewis to his friends) was a tutor and lecturer at Oxford University, and later Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University. In the judgement of many, he is the most popular and most effective explainer and defender of the Christian faith writing in English in this century. He tried to make a point of avoiding disputes on matters where Christians disagree, and defending those beliefs which they hold in common. His work was valued by many Christians of widely differing backgrounds: Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presyterian, Roman Catholic, etc. Prayer (traditional language) Almighty God, whose servant C.S.Lewis received of thy grace singular gifts of insight in understanding the truth in Christ Jesus, and of eloquence and clarity in presenting that truth to his readers: Raise up in our day faithful interpreters of thy Word, that we, being set free from all error and unbelief, may come to the knowledge that maketh us wise unto salvation: through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. And all my sky is domed with cloudless blue;
Eternal summer in a moment's space
Breathes with sweet air and glows and warms me through.
One droop of your dear mouth, one tear of yours,
One gasp of Faith half-strangled by its foe,
And down through a waste world of slag and sewers
And hammering and loud wheels once more I go.
Thus, what old poets told me about love (Tristram's obedience, Isoud's sovereignty...) The English scholar, science-fiction writer, and Christian apologist Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated privately and at the University of Oxford, and was a member of The Inklings, a group of Oxford writers including J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. A fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925 to 1954, he was subsequently professor of medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis's critical works include Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition (1936), which examines the connections between medieval literature and courtly love, and A Preface to Paradise Lost (1942). Lewis was known to a large public, however, as a persuasive and passionate advocate of conservative Christianity through books which examined and explained moral and religious problems. His Perelandra trilogy Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)
"Do not be scared by the word authority. Believing things on authority only means believing them because you have been told by someone you think trustworthy. Ninety-nine per cent of the things you believe are believed on authority. I believe there is such a place as New York. I have not seen it myself. I could not prove by abstract reasoning that there must be a place. I believe it because reliable people have told me so. The ordinary man believes in the Solar System, atoms, evolution, and the circulation of the blood on authority - because the scientists say so. (…) A man who jibbed at authority in other things as some people do in religion would have to be content to know nothing all his life."
Clive Staples Lewis is born on November 29th, 1898 in Belfast. His parents are nominally members of the Anglican Church. His father, with whom Lewis had a problematic relationship for a large part of his life, was an attorney and came from a socially emancipated British labor environment. His mother belonged to a Scottish-Irish preachers' family (on her paternal side) and to an old Anglo-Norman family which had established itself in Ireland under Henry II (on her maternal side). Lewis was especially proud of this latter fact as a young man.
