The End of Snail Mail?
Is the threat of a deadly disease enough to kill off postal deliveries?
Newsweek Web Exclusive Oct. 13 - We've all heard about the media food chain, where a controversial story first appears in the tabloids and then finds its way into the establishment organs. But no one thought that the same would apply to anthrax attacks. As I was ingesting the information the about the cutaneous rash afflicting Tom Brokow's assistant and workers in white biohazrd suits testing the New York Times newsroom, my office door opened. It was the upbeat fellow whose duties include distributing the mail. "Hi, Steven!," he chirped, then dropped a packet of envelopes, packages, and magazines on my desk, neatly bound with a rubber band. Uh, thanks. Minutes later, a directive went around to all of us at NEWSWEEK: this was the last delivery we'd get for a while. AND YOU KNOW what? Losing mail delivery in 2001 is nowhere near the problem it would have been just a few years ago. Electronic communications, particularly e-mail, fax and the Web, have already supplanted the postal service-commonly known in the high-tech community as snail mail. It's just another example of the relentless calculus of the digital revolution, where bits trump atoms. The threat that a deadly disease might be a consequence of opening an envelope could be a tipping point that leads to changes in the way we look at snail mail-and heads us down a road where daily mail delivery goes the way of the milkman.

Partial Solar Eclipse 2004
With David H. Levy, Steven O'Meara and friends
Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Images of a partially eclipsed sun taken from the summit of Mauna Kea by Steven O'Meara. Notice the red and green colored fringes on the limb and the occulted edge of the sun. Mauna Kea summit, Hawaii Island Comet hunter David H. Levy and Sky and Telescope writer Steve O'Meara made a pilgrimage up to the summit of Mauna Kea the day afer David's AstroTalk in Hilo. Subaru Telescope graciously allowed us to set up outside the enclosure building. Summit level clouds descended just in time for the first contact viewing, after which David Levy gave his 1000tth public reading, this time a verse from Song of Honor, by Ralph Hodgson. Several telescopes were set up with white light and H-alpha filters (we caught a prominence just below a sunspot near the solar limb opposite the first contact point and could detect diffraction fringes off the occulting moon and solar limb). We were able to witness several green flashes while the "bitten" solar disk slipped below the clouds, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement and awe, quite a surprise for "just" a partial. Next stop: Total lunar eclipse, where we hope the 13k foot elevation of Mauna Kea may give us a fleeting glimpse of a portion of a moon in totality while it rises above the horizon. A solar and lunar eclipse within two weeks of each other from the same location. Visitor Information Station volunteers getting ready to serve the public

TSP History
The First Three Years: 1979 - 1981
The Texas Star Party was started in 1979 by Deborah Byrd , members of the Austin Astronomical Society, and the University of Texas McDonald Observatory. It was a gathering of 50-100 astronomy enthusiasts for a weekend in August at nearby Davis Mountains State Park. There was observing, comraderie, a Saturday evening speaker, and special Saturday night observing at McDonald Observatory.
On the Ranch: 1982 - Present
Founders David Clark George Ellis , and Don Garland organized the TSP on Prude Ranch in 1982. The TSP is held each year in late April or May. Astronomy clubs from the Southwest Region of the Astronomical League(SWRAL) and individual volunteers help operate the annual astronomy convention. TSP annual population has grown from 535 attendees in 1982 to more than 800 attendees in 1994. The TSP relationship with McDonald Observatory and the University of Texas has remained strong throughout the years. TSP has strongly supported the protection of night-time skies from ever-growing light-pollution. This support has included funding public information vehicles regarding light pollution, efficient lighting practices, and exterior-lighting ordinances in the west Texas area. TSP Light Reduction Project donors raised over $25,000 for activities such as the replacement of various street light fixtures throughout Jeff Davis county and in nearby towns of Fort Davis, Valentine, Marfa, and Alpine. This continuing effort is intended to preserve the dark skies for future TSPs, as well as to protect the viability of McDonald Observatory.

Apple has surprisingly little organization of its archival materials for research such as mine. However, they very happily sent me annual stockholder reports for several of the years within my period, and, though not particularly useful, they are quite interesting in revealing Apple's self-conscious corporate culture. [Since this was written in spring 1998, the organization of Apple's web site has been substantially improved, especially for access to technical archival material - but its meagre history pages have been removed.]

But Jobs was not happy in school, finding it boring and this precipitated the family's move to Los Altos. There he attended Homestead High. His electronics teacher, Holn McCollum, remembers Jobs as "something of a loner" and "always had a different way of looking at things" (Angelelli). When Jobs was a freshman in high school, William Hewlett offered him a summer job at the Hewlett-Packard plant. It was there, when Jobs was 13, that he met the man with whom he would invent "the first ready-made personal computer"the 18 year old, college drop-out Steve Wozniak (Lemelson-MIT). At this time though, Jobs helped Wozniak sell his "'blue box' an illegal pocket-size telephone attachment that would allow the user to make free long-distance calls" (Angelelli). Jobs also worked on his entrepreneurial skills, selling and repairing stereos throughout his high school career, in addition to his job at the plant.

Steven Levy
Steven Levy is a well renowned ALife author - especially for his book, "Artificial Life: Quest for New Life" (incidently, the book which got James interested in AI). Mr. Levy is currently the senior editor of Newsweek . We were honored to have the opportunity to interview Steven Levy. 1.) You are a leading writer in the field of ALife - how did you get interested in ALife?
Unfortunately I was not at the first Alife conference in 1987, but heard about it and was fascinated. I had done some research into cellular automata and saw that things were moving towards the creation of biological-style behaviors and wanted to document it. 2.) Artificial Life is growly rapidly, where do you envision it in years to come?
The major breakthrough of course would be to create something that satisfies even a skeptic's definition of "alive-ness." 3.) What practical applications are there to ALife?

I Love the Smell of Silicon in the Morning
A woman says to me: "My daughters love science, and they use computers, but they just aren't interested in technology." Try this one: "My daughter is an excellent driver, but she has no interest in internal combustion." We're supposed to use computers, not worship them. There will be those fascinated with the machine qua machine, but we have no reason to assume this to be a superior approach. Except, of course, that it's the masculine approach by computer culture standards, and therefore has the air of superiority. It's the difference between those of us who just want to get to where we're going, and those of us who read Car and Driver magazine. Behind the wheel, we're all called "drivers." In 8.3 million households in America a woman is the primary home computer user. Two out of every three on-the-job computer users is a woman.

When I saw the link on Instapundit to a Buzz MAchine post about a Newsweek column by Steven Levy, I asked myself "Who's Steven Levy?" Then I read his dull column and, to be frank, I didn't care. Well, my point is not to attack Levy (okay, in some way it is), but to underline how the fuddy duddies of the legacy media are now beginning to embarrass themselves.
