Lessing has been called the true founder of modern German literature. His most famous dramas are Miss Sara Sampson (1755), a domestic tragedy, Minna von Barnhelm (1755), a comedy about honor, marriage, and pretence, and Nathan the Wise (1779), set in Jerusalem during the Crusades. "One single grateful thought raised to heaven is the most perfect prayer." (from Minna von Barnhelm Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was born in Kamenz, Saxony, where his father, Johann Gottfried Lessing, worked as a Protestant pastor. He was the first of twelve children - five died in childhood. The family had long clerical traditions, and Lessing was expected to become a pastor. He was educated in Meissen at St. Afra's School. In 1746 he entered the university of Leipzig, where he studied theology and medicine. To the disappointment for his family, he devoted himself to writing comedies. Among his friends was his cousin Christolob Mylius, a freethinker. His first play, Der junge Gelehrte (1747) was performed by the acting company of Caroline and Johann Neuber. It was written in the style of Holberg and mocked arrogant students. Lessing's early career as a playwright was stopped when the acting company left him alone to cover its debts. In 1748 Lessing fled to Wittenberg where he studied at the university and then moved to Berlin. At that time it had a hundred thousand inhabitants and its atmosphere in religious matters was freer than in the provinces, although Fredrick II did his best to suppress political discussion. In a letter Lessing wrote: "But let someone come on the scene who wants to raise his voice on behalf of the rights of subjects and against exploitation and despotism... and you will soon discover which is the most servile land in Europe to this very day."

German playwright and critic. A leader of the Enlightenment, he wrote the plays Minna von Barnheim (1763) and Nathan the Wise Encyclopedia Lessing, Gotthold Ephraim g´t h´lt ā fr¤Äm ) , 1729–81, German philosopher, dramatist, and critic, one of the most influential figures of the Enlightenment. He was connected with the theater in Berlin, where he produced some of his most famous works, and with the national theater in Hamburg. His series of critical essays, Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1767–69), attacked the French classical theater and claimed that it had failed to capture the true spirit of Aristotelian dramatic unities. From 1770 he was librarian at Wolfenb¼ttel, writing there Zur Geschichte und Literatur [on history and literature] (1773–77). Other significant critical works are Literaturbriefe [literary letters] (1759–65) and Laokoon (1766). Lessing differentiated between the poet as interpreter of time and the artist as interpreter of space; he found different aesthetic criteria applicable to each. His plays include

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Hamburgische Dramaturgie , a series of criticisms of plays and players, was undertaken in furtherance of the attempt to establish at Hamburg the first national German theatre. While the theatrical enterprise proved abortive, the Dramaturgie established the principle upon which the future of the stage in all countries depends, that for dramatic art the immediate theatrical public is no competent court of appeal. But the direct and most important effect of the Dramaturgie was to complete the task which Lessing had begun in previous writings, and that was to overthrow the dominion of the arbitrary French rules and French models established by Gottsched. Lessing vindicated its real laws to the drama, made clear the difference between the Greeks and their would-be successors, and established the claims of Shakespeare as the modern master of both tragedy and comedy. His own dramatic efforts were cautious and tentative, but progressive, opposing the realism of the English domestic drama to the artificiality of the French, while holding a judicious mean between English and French examples. During the whole of the seventeenth century and the earlier part of the eighteenth, the literary history of Germany may almost be compared to a desert, and in the annals of no other modern nation shall we find such a long period of barrenness. The chief diversion is the animated controversy between the school of the pedantic Gottsched, who ruled at Leipsic, and the partisans of Bodmer, who at Zurich brought out from obscurity the long-neglected

Email Us GOTTHOLD EPHRAIM LESSING (1729-1781) G OTTHOLD Ephraim Lessing's name belongs to the very first rank among writers for and about the theater. He was born in a Luteran clergyman's family, and began very early to show his interest in the stage, having written a comedy before he was seventeen. He came under the notice of Voltaire , who employed him in making translations. During several years Lessing was one of the contributors to Madame Neuber's Leipzig theater; but his dramatic principles, as they defined themselves, became more and more opposed both to those of Voltaire and the Leipzig school. His first important play, Miss Sara Sampson (1755) was not at all suited to the tastes of the pseudo-classicists. In 1767 Lessing became associated with a group of actors in Hamburg, at which place he wrote the justly celebrated Hamburg Dramaturgy , in which he explained to the world the principles underlying the art of the theater. The great event of the year 1767, however, was the production of his
