LEROUX Gaston (1868-1927)
vendredi 18 avril 2003.

    Gaston Leroux
His lasting fame, however, is due to his novels; Leroux successfully translated the adventurousness of his life into sensational works of fiction. The sensationalism was not only on the written page, however: he used to announce the completion of each novel to family and neighbours by firing a pistol into the air! Leroux was one of the pioneers of the detective novel. In this genre, his hero Rouletabille can stand comparison with Sherlock Holmes for his use of reason and logic to solve the most puzzling mysteries. But he is most famous in the English-speaking world for The Phantom of the Opera , which has delighted and terrified readers since its publication in 1911. There have been a number of popular film and stage versions, from the 1925 silent movie, starring Lon Chaney, to the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical. But nothing can arouse such mounting dread as the original novel. In contrast to the cool rationality of Rouletabille, Leroux here displayed enormous insight into the mind of the criminally insane. His reporting skills helped the French fantastique become more real and contemporary. Today, Leroux is also remembered as the author of a series of brilliant detective novels starring the dashing young journalist Rouletabille , conceived as a direct challenge to Conan Doyle. Leroux also penned the tragic yet murderous man-ape Balaoo (1911) and the adventures of , a man unjustly pursued by a hostile fate (1913, 1919).

Like London and Conrad, , Gaston had a passion for the sea, which didn't go much further than sailing and deap-sea fishing at St. Valery-en Caux, in Normandy. To please his father, Gaston, who wanted to become a writer, studied law instead. His father died the year Gaston had graduated, and left him a coniderable fortune, which, none the less, Gaston managed to burn in less than a year, enjoying the Parisian life of the Quartier Latin, champagne, beautiful ladies, gamblings and expensive dinners. Indeed, Leroux was a sought-after companion. Around his table the conversations were intensely animated with wit, humour and laughter. He then started as a freelance writer, and eventually was appointed as a critic by a Parisian newspaper. This was the start of a journalistic career, followed by worlwide missions at Le Matin, which brought Gaston as far as to Egypt and Korea. In Russia, in 1905, he covered the first turbulences of the Revolution.
