    Louis-James-Alfred LEFEBURE-WELY Vous entendez le début de son Boléro de Concert , op. 166, interprété par Hervé Désarbre à l'orgue du Val de Grâce (CD L'orgue insolite Mandala MAN 4894-HMCD 78) Louis-James-Alfred LEFEBURE-WELY (1817-1869) fut l'organiste officiel du Second Empire. A huit ans, il remplaçait déjà, à l'orgue de Saint-Roch, son père, atteint de paralysie, et à la mort de celui-ci en 1831 il en devint, par protection de la reine Amélie, titulaire malgré son jeune âge. En 1835 il obtint les deux premiers prix d’orgue et de piano au Conservatoire. En 1847, il abandonna Saint-Roch pour devenir le titulaire de l'orgue de la Madeleine (qu'il avait inauguré en 1846) puis, en 1857, de Saint-Sulpice. Il fut l'ami du grand facteur d'orgues Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811-1899), constructeur précisément des orgues de la Madeleine et de Saint-Sulpice On lui doit de nombreuses pièces pour piano, orgue et harmonium, 3 messes, 3 symphonies, un peu de musique de chambre, un opéra, Les Recruteurs , créé en 1861, et la cantate Après la Victoire créée en 1863.

    ÉLOGE DE VICTOR REGNAULT, Ingénieur en chef des mines, membre de l'Académie des sciences
    Par M. J.-B. DUMAS , secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie des sciences, lu dans la séance publique annuelle du 14 mars 1881. Messieurs, ce n'est pas sans émotion que je viens devant l'Académie, à la fin de ma carrière, consacrer quelques pages à la mémoire d'un confrère que j'ai profondément admiré et beaucoup aimé : Victor Regnault. Dès ses débuts, les circonstances nous avaient rapprochés, et les événements ont semblé se plaire à nous mettre en contact plus intime encore aux heures décisives de son existence, parfois si heureuse et souvent si tourmentée. Parmi les savants dont les travaux ont pris une place éminente et durable dans nos annales, il n'en est aucun dont la vie ait offert les contrastes qu'on rencontre dans celle de Regnault. Quand la fortune semblait lui sourire et l'accabler de ses dons, au fond toujours irritée et menaçante, elle se réservait de le traiter en marâtre et de le dépouiller de toutes ses faveurs par le plus sauvage des retours. Il y a vingt ans, entouré d'une famille nombreuse, au milieu de laquelle brillait, dans tout l'éclat de sa renommée naissante, le jeune artiste dont la France en pleurs a consacré la mémoire héroïque, Regnault avait vu, coup sur coup, disparaître tous les siens; doué de la raison la plus ferme, il avait senti son intelligence s'obscurcir ; habile à tous les exercices du corps, infatigable même, il venait naguère vers nous, affaissé sous le poids d'une vieiliesse prématurée, soutenu par un bras charitable, et traînant des membres impuissants que la volonté ne dirigeait plus. Entré dans la vie par un chemin difficile et rude, il avait rapidement conquis tous les honneurs, amassé tous les biens, connu toutes les joies; victime d'une fatalité implacable, il descendait, avec la même hâte fiévreuse, toutes les étapes de la voie douloureuse. On dirait que deux divinités rivales se rencontrant près de son berceau, tandis que l'une lui promettait tous les succès, l'autre le condamnait à tous les revers.
