Robert Edward Lee was a great general who commanded the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He is one of the most beloved figures in American History. Lee's fame rests on his military achievements as Confederate Commander in the face of overwhelming odds, and on his outstanding personal character. He won admiration and respect of Northerners as well as Southerners. Lee fought for one section of the young nation, but the struggle did not make him intolerant. He fought, not for personal gain, but to prove himself worthy of a cause. Union General Ulysses S. Grant, to whom Lee was finally forced to surrender, said about Lee: "There was not a man in the Confederacy whose influence with the whole people was as great as his." This sculpture of Robert E. Lee has lifelike touches that make it a unique and noteworthy collectors item

Famous Death Masks Civil War General Robert E. Lee
About the history of the plastar death mask made of Civil War general Robert E. Lee.
POSTMORTEMSWHAT THEY DIED FROM ROBERT E. LEE (1807-1870), U.S. general From the end of the Civil War in 1865 to his death, Lee served as president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Va. His campus residence was the President's House, which he designed, and there he died on Oct. 12, 1870, following an apparent stroke some days previously. His last words, uttered in delirium, were "Strike the tent." Lawyer-diplomat James Brown Scott gave a copy of Lee's death mask to the Museum of the Confederacy in 1925. The mask, according to Scott, was taken by sculptor Clark Mills "immediately upon General Lee's death. Two copies of it were known to exist, one of which came, last year, into the possession of the American sculptor, the late Paul W. Bartlett, who had intended to use it for making a medallion of General Lee. Mr. Bartlett was good enough to make me two copies of the mask, one of which I would like to keep for myself. . ."Thus at least four copies of the mask existed, though the present whereabouts of three are unknown. After accepting the mask from Scott, Susan B. Harrison, a regent of the museum, took it to Edward V. Valentine for criticism. Valentine, himself a sculptor who had posed Lee for the general's last sitting in 1870, noted a greater likeness from the side view. According to the sketchy Harrison notes of their conversation, Valentine thought "the nose is too pinched for a life maskthe ear is not correct (altogether)the nostrils [are] peculiarly shapedJust over the eyes there is a likeness to Gen. Lee. . . ."

Quotes of the Day for 19 January 2004 - Robert E. Lee
Duty then is the sublimest word in the English language. You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less. There is a terrible war coming, and these young men who have never seen war cannot wait for it to happen, but I tell you, I wish that I owned every slave in the South, for I would free them all to avoid this war. You must be careful how you walk, and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set. True patriotism sometimes requires of men to act exactly contrary, at one period, to that which it does at another, and the motive which impels them - the desire to do right - is precisely the same. There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. I did only what my duty demanded. I could have taken no other course without dishonor. And if all were to be done over again, I should act in precisely the same manner.

John was the third generation of the brick making Ogan family living in southern Ohio after moving from Virginia. On November 8, 1861, John Ogan enlisted in the 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F at McArthur. Like Andrew Jackson Nickell, John Ogan was an active combatant in the Vicksburg Campaign. John was shot through the shoulder at the Battle of Champion Hills on May 16, 1863 as the Union Army pressed westward from Jackson to Vicksburg, Mississippi. John Ogan survived his wounds, and was mustered out with his regiment at New Orleans on November 14, 1864. He returned to Vinton County to start the highly successful McArthur Brickyard. The Ogans had been making bricks for generations. John also made and played his own violins. He enjoyed a long and prosperous life in McArthur, and collected a veterans pension. John had nine children with three wives, and passed away in 1915 at the age of seventy-nine. EDWARD H. CULVER

You can be a n y t h i n g you want to be, have anything you desire , accomplish anything you set out to accomplish if you will hold to that d e s i r e with singleness of purpose." ~ Robert E. Lee Great leader and brilliant Confederate General, Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was born on this day in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The son of a Revolutionary War hero , Lee graduated second in his class at West Point. "Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one," he said. Lee fought in the Mexican War and was called by his commander "the very best soldier I ever saw in the field." After the war, he became superintendent of West Point (1852-1855) and sought to raise the school's academic standards. Before the start of the Civil War, he freed all of his slaves. The bold and daring commander was so highly regarded that Abraham Lincoln repeatedly offered Lee command of the Union armies. Lee, of course, resigned, joined the Confederates, and became Jefferson Davis' personal military advisor. "A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others," Lee said. After the war, he urged Southerners to
