Robert Edward Lee (18071870). The idol of the South to this day, His Southernassignments included major General, Virginia s land and naval forces
http://web.ccsd.k12.wy.us/Social Studies/06/0102Lee.html
Robert Edward Lee
The idol of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil war, but this did not prevent him from keeping the Union armies in Virginia at bay for almost three years. The son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse" Harry Lee-who fell into disrepute in his later years attended West Point and graduated second in his class. During his four years at the military academy he did not earn a single demerit and served as the cadet corps' adjutant. Upon his 1829 graduation he was posted to the engineers. Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in Georgia, Virginia, and New York. During the war he served on the staffs of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Particularly distinguishing himself scouting for and guiding troops, he won three brevets and was slightly wounded at Chapultepec.
Following a stint in Baltimore Harbor he became superintendent of the military academy in 1852. When the mounted arm was expanded in 1855, Lee accepted the lieutenant colonelcy of the 2nd Cavalry in order to escape from the painfully slow promotion in the engineers. Ordered to western Texas, he served with his regiment until the 1857 death of his father-in-law forced him to ask for a series of leaves to settle the estate.
In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Brown's Harper's Ferry Raid. Thereafter he served again in Texas until summoned to Washington in 1861 by Winfield Scott who tried to retain Lee in the U. S. service. But the Virginian rejected the command of the Union's field forces on the day after Virginia seceded. He then accepted an invitation to visit Governor John Letcher in Virginia. His resignation as colonel, 1st Cavalry-to which he had recently been promoted-was accepted on April 25, 1861.

S TRATFORD General Robert E. Lee's letters home This is an image of a letter from Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), dated 22 November 1861, to his daughters Anne Carter Lee (1839-1862) and Eleanor Agnes Lee (1841-1873) Some of Lee's letters, written during the trying times of the war, reveal how much he missed his family and home. Just a month later, Lee wrote to his daughter on Christmas Day: "My Dear Daughter: Having distributed such poor Christmas gifts as I had to those around me, I have been looking for something for you. Trifles even are hard to get these war-times, and you must not therefore expect more. I have sent you what I thought most useful in your separation from me, and hope it will be of some service...To compensate for such ?trash,'[money] I send you some sweet violets, that I gathered for you this morning while covered with dense white frost, whose crystals glittered in the bright sun like diamonds, and formed a brooch of rare beauty and sweetness, which could not be fabricated by the expenditure of a world of money. ...Among the calamities of war, the hardest to bear perhaps, is the separation of families and friends."... Of Arlington and Stratford, the two homes around which so many hallowed memories were grouped, he wrote his wife the same day:

LEE, ROBERT EDWARD (1807-1870). Robert Edward Lee, army officer and commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, qv spent several crucial years of his career in Texas. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall, Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of Gen. Henry and Ann (Carter) Lee. He graduated second in his class at the United States Military Academy in 1829. On June 30, 1831, while stationed at Fort Monroe he married Mary Custis of Arlington, Virginia; they became the parents of seven children. Lee was quite devoted to his family, and as often as military duty would permit, he spent much time at home. He had a wide variety of assignments-working in the chief engineer's office, Washington, D.C., 1834-37; supervising construction on the St. Louis harbor, 1837; and serving with his regiment at Fort Hamilton, New York, 1841-46, with Gen. John E. Wool's qv army from San Antonio to Buena Vista, 1846-47, and with Gen. Winfield Scott's army from Vera Cruz to Mexico City, 1847. As Scott's chief of staff during the Mexican War, qv Lee won three brevets- major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel - all because of conspicuous gallantry in the field. After the Mexican War Lee directed the building of Fort Carroll, near Baltimore, Maryland. From September 1, 1852, until March 31, 1855, he was superintendent of the United States Military Academy. On March 3, 1855, Congress had authorized two new regiments of infantry and two of cavalry to help protect the 8,000-mile western frontier. Against 11,000 troops were 30,000 Indians in widely dispersed raiding bands. Texas had a frontier of more than 1,200 miles, with only 2,886 United States officers and enlisted men to defend it. Lee was with Albert Sidney Johnston's

Robert Edward Lee
The strong, healthy boy born to "Light Horse Harry" and Ann Carter Lee on January 19, 1807 was the last Lee born at Stratford to survive to maturity. Though he spent fewer than four years there, his later boyhood visits left an impression that he carried throughout his life. As sometimes happens in distinguished families, one member seems to fall heir to the best qualities of the previous generations and none of the flaws. So it was with Robert Edward Lee. From both the Carters and the Lees he inherited a handsome countenance. From his father came rare physical strength and endurance. The sense of duty that Harry had learned from George Washington was vividly imparted to his son Robert. Even "Light Horse Harry's" difficulties with money seemed to have produced positive responses in Robert, who throughout his life was meticulous and prudent in all finacial matters. Ann Carter Lee's gentleness was inherited by Robert, and his loving care of his ailing mother was the mainstay of her life. With his father and elder brothers away, and his mother and sisters in failing health, Robert had become, by age 12, head of the household. On cold afternoons, when his mother was well enough, young Robert would stuff paper in the cracks of the carriage to block the wind and take her driving. Years later, when he left for West Point, Ann Lee wrote to a cousin, "How I will get on without Robert? He is both a son and daughter to me." Robert Lee's choice of a military career was dictated by financial necessity. There was no money left to send him to Harvard, where his older brother Charles Carter studied. Such circumstances led him to an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Robert, who led the Cadet Corps in 1829, graduated second in his class. In four years he received not a single demerit, and he became one of the most popular cadets in his class. When he returned as the Academy's superintendent years later, he won the same affectionate respect from the cadets for his compassion, sense of fairness and strong moral leadership.

          Character and Influence
Many historians consider Robert E. Lee the greatest general of the Civil War, and it is generally agreed that his military genius, hampered though it was by lack of men and materiel, was a principal factor in keeping the Confederacy alive. Others point out, however, that he never developed a coordinated overall strategy, that he failed to provide an adequate supply system for his armies, and that he was reluctant to deal with difficult subordinates, such as Longstreet. Of admirable personal character, Lee was idolized by his soldiers and the people of the South and soon won the admiration of the North. He has remained an ideal of the South and an American hero, although some late 20th cent. historians have tended toward a more critical view of him as a general and as a man.

Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia's Westmoreland County on Jan. 19, 1807, the third son of Henry ("Light Horse Harry") and Ann Hill Carter Lee. Declining fortunes forced the family's removal to Alexandria, where Robert distinguished himself in local schools. His father's death in 1811 increased responsibilities on all the sons; Robert, especially, cared for his invalid mother. Lee graduated number two in his class from the U.S. Military Academy in 1829. Battle of Seven Days June 25 - July 1, 1862
"It was not war...it was murder."
Major General Daniel Harvey Hill, CSA A defeat that could have ended the war stared Robert E. Lee in the eyes when he assumed command of the Confederate forces participating in the battles in the eastern theater. General Joseph Eggleston Johnston's wounding in the Battle of Seven Pines led to Lee's appointment. Richmond was poorly defended: The capital's fortifications were lacking, and the defending troops were demoralized and outnumbered by the Union forces nearby. Lee acted immediately. He strengthened Richmond's defenses, improved his army's organization, replenished supplies and weapons, and made himself known to all his troops. All the while, he was formulating a plan to drive the Union troops from Richmond and gain the upper hand. Lee's actions worked and worked well. General Lee's aim was to cut off Little Mac's (Major General George B. McClellan, USA) main army of 125,000 troops from their supply base. Lee planned several ruses to be supported by Major General John B. Magruder and Major General Thomas J. Stonewall. The plan was to commence on June 26, but McClellan had also planned an assault that day. Once he heard of Stonewall Jackson's approach McClellan canceled his plan under the mistaken idea that his forces would be outnumbered. Although the Lee's plan didn't meet with success in the manner he envisioned it still worked. He cut off McClellan from his supplies, Lee won 22 guns and a large amount of badly needed supplies, and broke the siege of Richmond. The Confederate capital was safe for the time being.
