The papers of this Fauquier County family contain several references to slaves; one item concerns a carpenter, George, employed by the Fauquier White Sulphur Springs Company (section 22). An 1861 memorandum describes Isham Keith's dispute with an African American family concerning his fence rails being used as firewood (section 14). Another item in section 14 is a document of several pages in which Isham Keith records his opinions of free African Americans and their negative effect on slaves as a result of envy, which he believes leads to crime, especially theft. He outlines a plan for the state legislature to impose on the counties for removing all the free African Americans in the state by giving free African Americans a choice of enslavement or emigration to Africa. In the same section is a summary of Keith's losses during the 1862 Federal occupation of Fauquier County. 447. Keith family papers, 1830-1979. ca. 1,025 items. Mss1K2694cFA2. Elizabeth Hill Hill Carter (1796-1870), grandson of Charles Carter, was the owner of Shirley during the Civil War. Shirley survived the war intact because Hill Carter, in 1862, was able to acquire from General George B. McClellan a Federal Safeguard. That safeguard protected the family and property throughout the duration of the war. The current owner, Charles Hill Carter II , is the great-grandson of Hill Carter, and is the ninth generation to own the property.

The Tragedy of Fauquier's 'Robert E. Lee'
from The relationship between Confederate General Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) and Fauquier County is well known. Gen. Lee had relatives in the area on the Randolph/Turner side of his ancestry in Fauquier, and as a boy, he attended the private family school at Eastern View near Midland, with his Randolph cousins.
When he was a Brevet Second Lieutenant Robert E. Lee, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, spent the summer of 1829 in Warrenton while on furlough, shortly after his graduation from West Point.
He spent part of the time here traveling to Washington, D.C., where he had the sad responsibility of settling his late mother's financial affairs.
In October 1829, he received orders from his commander, Brig. Gen. C. Gratiot, to report for duty in Savannah, Ga. Fauquier's 'Robert E. Lee' However, there was another Robert E. Lee with even stronger connections to Fauquier who remains largely forgotten, largely because his life was ended at an early age.

"With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword....." Lee in a letter to his sister, April 20, 1861
The idol of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil war, but this did not prevent him from keeping the Union armies in Virginia at bay for almost three years. The son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse" Harry Lee-who fell into disrepute in his later years attended West Point and graduated second in his class. During his four years at the military academy he did not earn a single demerit and served as the cadet corps' adjutant. Upon his 1829 graduation he was posted to the engineers. Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in Georgia, Virginia, and New York. During the war he served on the staffs of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Particularly distinguishing himself scouting for and guiding troops, he won three brevets and was slightly wounded at Chapultepec.

Lee rode into San Antonio under orders to leave his remote Texas post and report to Washington. He saw a mob of soldiers in unusual uniforms and asked who they were. Then he learned that General Twiggs had surrendered everything to the State and that the Union troops were now prisoners of war. Caroline Darrow wrote in her Recollections , "I will never forget his look of astonishment, as with his lips trembling and his eyes full of tears, he exclaimed, 'Has it come so soon as this?'" The Texas troops tried to stop his journey and he stated that he was a Virginian, not a Texan, and he was an officer of the United States army under orders to report to Washington, and he intended to carry out his orders. The Texans permitted him to leave. Letters from Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) to William Ellinger of Virginia City, Montana Letter 17 January 1866, Lexington, VA Lexington, Va. 17 Jany '66
