Robert E. Lee
Robert Edward Lee was born at Stratford in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father was Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, famed Revolutionary War hero and governor of Virginia. Harry Lee was preoccupied with politics and extricating himself from financial difficulties. He left the rearing of his son to others. Lee did not have sufficient funds to attend a traditional college, so he enrolled at West Point. In 1829 he graduated second in his class and was much admired by his fellow cadets. His initial service was in the Engineering Corps. In 1831, Lee married Mary Anne Randolph Custis, a wealthy plantation owner and the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. Lee served in the Mexican War (1846-48) and was wounded in the storming of Chapultepec. He won high praise from General Winfield Scott . Lee transferred to the cavalry in the hope of earning faster promotions. From 1852 to 1855, Lee was the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. Lee gained national attention in 1859 when, at home on leave, he was summoned to lead marines against

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870)
Born: 19 January 1807 Stratford, VA, USA
Died: 1870
The idol of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil war, but this did not prevent him from In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Brown's Harper's Ferry Raid. Thereafter he served again in Texas until summoned to Washington in 1861 by Winfield Scott who tried to retain Lee in the U. S. service. But the Virginian rejected the command of the Union's field forces on the day after Virginia seceded. He then accepted an invitation to visit Governor John Letcher in Virginia. His resignation as colonel, 1st Cavalry-to which he had recently been promoted-was accepted on April 25, 1861. His Southern assignments included: major general, Virginia's land and naval forces (April 23, 1861); commanding Virginia forces (April 23 July 1861); brigadier general, CSA (May 14, 186 1); general, CSA (from June 14, 186 1); commanding Department of Northwestern Virginia (late July-October 1861); commanding Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida (November 8, 186 1-March 3, 1862); and commanding Army of Northern Virginia June 1, 1862-April 9, 1865). In charge of Virginia's fledgling military might, he was mainly involved in organizational matters. As a Confederate brigadier general, and later full general, he was in charge of supervising all Southern forces in Virginia. In the first summer of the war he was given his first field command in western Virginia. His Cheat Mountain Campaign was a disappointing fizzle largely due to the failings of his superiors. His entire tenure in the region was unpleasant, dealing with the bickering of his subordinates-William W. Loring, John B. Floyd, and Henry A. Wise. After this he became known throughout the South as "Granny Lee. " His debut in field command had not been promising, but Jefferson Davis appointed him to command along the Southern Coast.

Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in GA, VA and New York. During the war he served on the staff of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Tho' Homor sings of Grecian Isles
In strains that every heart beguiles,
How warriors fought and heroes fell
For Helen, false and fickle belle;
Tho' France with martial joy may own
The greatest warrior world has known, Let Albion proud as is her due, Boast of decisive Waterloo And yet Virginia rightly claims The greatest galaxy of names In modern times, if not in all, Names which for adoration call. First, Henry, whose impassion'd zeal And eloquence made others feel The force of his resistless plea For either death or liberty; Then Washington, where can you trace In annals of the human race In any clime, a greater claim To immortality and fame? And still to-day Virginia gives A name that now and ever lives;

soldier, born in Stratford, Westmoreland County, Virginia, 19 Jan., 1807; died in Lexington, Virginia, 12 Oct., 1870. He was the son of the Revolutionary general Henry Lee (q. v.), known as " Light-Horse Harry," was graduated from the U. S. military academy at West Point in 1829, ranking second in a class of forty-six, and was commissioned as a 2d lieutenant in the engineers.  At the beginning of the Mexican war he was assigned to duty as chief engineer of the army under General Wool, his rank being that of captain. His abilities as an engineer, and his conduct as a soldier, won the special admiration of General Scott, who attributed the fall of Vera Cruz to his skill, and repeatedly singled him out for commendation. Lee was thrice brevetted during the war, his last brevet to the rank of colonel being for services at the storming of Chapultepec.  In 1852 he was assigned to the command of the military academy at West Point, where he remained for about three years. He brought great improvements in the academy, notably enlarging its course of study and bringing it to a rank equal to that of the best European military schools. In 1855 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 2d regiment of cavalry, and assigned to duty on the Texan frontier, where he remained until near the beginning of the civil war, with the exception of an interval when, in 1859, he was ordered to Washington and placed in command of the force that was sent against John Brown at Harper's Ferry.

Robert Edward Lee (18071870) at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, had beenin command of the Army of Northern Virginia for almost a year.
http://www.scotskinner.com/gettysburg/lee.htm
Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, had been in command of the Army of Northern Virginia for almost a year. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur James Lyon Freemantle of His Majesty's Coldstrem Guards describes Lee best in his classic book on the American Civil War, Three Months in the Southern States Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia, and was educated at the United States Military Academy. He graduated from West Point in 1829. He was a military engineer. He earned three brevets while in General Winfield Scott's staff in Mexico. He spent time as the superintendent of West Point, Lt. Colonel of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and Colonel of the 1st Cavalry Regiment. When war between the states seemed imminent, President Abraham Lincoln offered Lee command of the Union forces, but Lee declined. In 1861 he resigned from the U.S. Army when Virginia seceded from the Union. For a year he was military adviser to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, and was then placed in command of the Army in northern Virginia. His wife's ancestral home was in Arlington Virginia, a plantation that after the war the winning side would take away from the family and make it the Arlington National Cemetary.

He established a fine military reputation in the Mexican War and was promoted to colonel of cavalry. He was given the task of capturing the raiders who took part in John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859.
It was with a heavy heart that Lee heard of the secession of the southern states and realized that war was inevitable. He was not in favor of slavery. Indeed he is on record as saying that it was a moral and political evil. Also he had set free all the slaves whom he owned himself by inheritance and said that he was in favor of freeing all slaves in the south.
Thus, although Lee was loyal to the Union he was even more loyal to his state and therefore felt obliged to reject the offer made to him by Abraham Lincoln to take over command of the Union Army in order to crush the Confederate rebellion and preserve the Union.
Instead he accepted the offer made by Jefferson Davis to serve as his advisor, having at first been refused a position as field commander. During the first crucial months of the conflict Lee's services were certainly under used. He is said to have become more and more frustrated as he sat in Richmond with Davis and witnessed more and more of northern Virginia fall into the hand sof the Union forces. He was particularily annoyed by General Joseph E. Johnston's policy of withdrawal when he himself was in favor of attack.
