Overview
This series of lesson plans is designed to help you introduce reading and creative writing activities in a fun way. You can conduct the unit in as little as one week or optimally over a several week period. The length of time you need for the unit will depend on how many of the assignments and other activities you pursue.
In this unit, you will introduce the student to the limerick and other zany rhymes made famous by Edward Lear in the 1850's. The lessons use these limericks to introduce a number of basic poetic devices. Understanding and using these devices can improve the students general writing. They also serve as models for teaching the disciplined, systematic art of limerick and poetry writing.
All of the sessions use material found in books by Edward Lear that are a part of the Animated Artist Series. However, since these poems and limericks are in the public domain you may find them in a variety of books and may also find additional examples that you can use in this unit.
Objectives
After following this unit, the student will:

Edward Lear. 1812-1888.
Egyptian Neophron (Neophron Perncnopterus). The Birds of Europe, 1837. Signed and titled in the plate. Printed on warm white wove paper with full margins, as issued. Remains of paper tape at the extreme sheet edges; otherwise very fine original condition. An excellent impression with fresh, unfaded hand coloring. $1,500. Size: The Egyptian Vulture is the smallest of all the European Vultures. The bird posesses great endurance, and is able to fly up to 70 kilometers in search of food. Egyptian vultures are specialists in egg-eating. They are among the only known birds in the world to use stones as tools. They will repeatedly strike at an abandoned egg with stones, then use their beak to enlarge the hole and penetrate membrane. This behavior is not instinctive, but learned from other vultures, as the species is very intelligent. The first recorded bird ever to be protected by law, this bird was very close to one Pharaoh's heart. Feeling that their job as natural cleaners was very important, he forbade anyone to kill an Egyptian vulture. The crime was punishable by death. After this ruling, the bird came to be called "Pharaoh's Chicken." For images of the bird, please visit: http://www.mangoverde.com/birdsound/spec/spec30-47.html

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat;
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note. The Owl looked up to the stars above, And sang to a small guitar, 'O lovely Pussy ! O Pussy, my love, What a beautiful Pussy you are, You are, You are ! What a beautiful Pussy you are ! Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl ! How charmingly sweet you sing ! O let us be married ! Too long we have tarried : But what shall we do for a ring?'

Edward Lear Edward Lear is best known to most of us for his nonsense verse and limericks. He devoted his life, however, to drawing and painting birds and animals, as well as landscapes. Lear represented a halfway point between the stiff, detailed style of drawing associated with metal engraving and the freer style characteristic of lithography. Although his figures were rather rigid, Lear introduced some element of motion into them and occasionally added habitat backgrounds. He tried to express a feeling of individuality, or personality, in his birds rather than producing strictly zoological depictions.

His father alleged that the family was of Danish origin but they've been traced to Dorset in the 17th century. He had an unhappy childhood as neither parent had much time or energy to spare. He was closer to his sister Ann, who became a substitute mother and taught him to draw. From early childhood, he suffered from depression and by the age of six, he was having epileptic fits, an illness he did his best to conceal. He started writing poetry to amuse the family of one of his sisters and in his late teens embarked on a career as an artist - producing a book of picture for the Zoological Society in London. He was invited to Knowsley Hall by the Earl of Derby to make studies of their private menagerie but was soon amusing the children of the household with comic drawings and rhymes. In 1837 he went to Italy to paint landscapes and spent much of the rest of his life there. During a visit to England in 1846 he published his
