Lear, Edward
Encyclopedia Article Lear, Edward (1812-1888), English painter and humorist, born in London. The excellence of his early drawings of birds brought him to the attention of the London Zoological Society, for which he illustrated The Family of the Psittacidae (1832); these illustrations are considered among the most precise and vivid of all ornithological drawings. He traveled (1837-1847) throughout Europe and the Near East, recording his travels in the Illustrated Journals of a Landscape Painter. Lear's acutely observant travel books have been overshadowed by the popularity of his light verse, such as the famous poem “The Owl and the Pussycat.” Considered among the masters of the limerick , to which he gave the modern formula and metrical cadence, he wrote A Book of Nonsense Nonsense Songs (1871), and

Edward Lear 12 May 29 January ) was an artist illustrator and writer known for his nonsensical poetry and his limericks , a form which he popularised. He was born in Highgate , a suburb of London , the 20th child of his parents and raised by his eldest sister, Ann, twenty-one years his senior. His paintings were well received and he was favorably compared with Audubon . Throughout his life he continued to paint seriously. He had a lifelong ambition to illustrate Tennyson 's poems; near the end of his life a volume with a small number of illustrations was published, but his vision for the work was never realised. He did not keep good health. From the age of seven until the time of his death he suffered frequent

Lear's exacting and masterly skill as an artist was employed by many major publishers of nineteenth century English ornithologies and natural histories. Lear's work is further distinguished by the fact that he was the first bird artist to draw from living examples, capturing not only the precise details of the birds he painted, but also the individual bird's unique character traits. The plates Lear contributed to John Gould's Bird's of Europe are amoung the finest of that work. These rare, beautifully hand-colored plates are signed by Lear in the lithographic stone. Folio size, 21.5 x 14.5 inches.

LEAR, Edward (1812-1888). Artist and Author.
"WHEN I RETURNED FROM PALESTINE"
2 pages 8vo on black-edged paper, 29 June 1860.
Send this title to your inbox Lear had travelled in Palestine in the Spring of 1858, sometimes harassed by attacks of Arab tribesmen. He later wrote to his friend Lady Waldegrave that "there is enough in Jerusalem to set a man thinking for life." He returned briefly to England, then spent over a year in Rome, so it was evidently not until his return to England again at the end of May 1860 that he was able to ensure that Mrs. Ford received her present.
