Lear was a highly-regarded nature and landscape artist, but he is much better remembered for the whimsical nonsense poetry and limericks he produced throughout his life. Among his best-known works are The Owl and the Pussycat, The Dong With a Luminous Nose, and The Jumblies. Lear once gave drawing lessons to Queen Victoria ... He is sometimes compared with his fellow nonsense author Lewis Carroll ... Lear's former home in London is now the Edward Lear Hotel. FOUR GOOD LINKS

The 20th of 21 children, Edward Lear displayed artistic ability from a young age. By mid 1830 Lear was experimenting with lithography. Using his own initiative, when aged only 18, he started a large format book called Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae... (1832). It was drawn, lithographed, hand-coloured, and published by Lear himself in a limited edition. Due to financial difficulty, Lear reluctantly sold the whole of his stock to John Gould. At the age of 18, Lear then worked as a draughtsman for Gould, assisting on The Birds of Europe, and Monograph of the Ramphastidae... . While Lear's plates are still considered some of the finest ever published by Gould, he was better known for his limericks and nursery rhymes than his serious work as a professional artist.

Sist oppdatert: 24. januar 2004 Edward Lear was a man of many talents: illustrator, landscape painter, travel writer, and poet. But it was his talent as a writer of nonsense rhymes—known today as limericks—that he is best remembered by generation after generation of children. Before the works of Lear and Lewis Carroll were published, most literature written for children was full of " commonsense ", and was intended to provide moral or didactic instruction. Lear's limericks, on the other hand, could perhaps be said to be the Victorian version of today's cartoon series, where everyday "commonsense" was put to one side, and "nonsense" was allowed to run riot . It is mainly thanks to Edward Lear that the limerick is still so popular, more than a hundred years after his death, not only in English-speaking countries, but in many other countries too.

Edward Lear, the last photograph,
taken in 1887 Victorian Trickster: A Jungian Consideration of Edward Lear's Nonsense Verse
The foremost Lear scholar, Vivien Noakes, has pointed out that "When Lear was first writing there was no such thing as an established literary genre of nonsense" ( Wanderer 223). Why, then, should not one but two men writing in the mid-1800s simultaneously yet apparently without knowledge of each other introduce into English letters what amounted to a new genre, one that has never lost its popularity? The Victorian collective psyche must have been ready, somehow, to respond to the irrational characters and patterns depicted in the Alice stories and in Lear's nonsense limericks, songs, and stories. In his book, Art and the Creative Unconscious, the eminent Jungian analyst, Erich Neumann, has noted that "the creative impulse springs from the collective" (98), and that "although creative men usually live unknown to one another, without influence on one another, a common force seems to drive all those men who ever compensate for a cultural canon at a given time or shape a new one" (99). Such is the case with Carroll and Lear. Alice has been analyzed from a Jungian point of view (Bloomingdale 378-390). More analysis needs to be done on Carroll. However, no Jungian interpretation has yet been applied to Lear, and I propose such an interpretation here.
