Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) is one of Canada's most respected and beloved writers. A prolific author of prodigious talent, he had an international following during his career. Although he was best known as a humorist, he was also a professor of political economy, an historian, a social critic and propagandist, a writer of doggerel, and a platform entertainer. A Bibliography of Stephen Leacock employs the protocols of descriptive bibliography to record all of Leacock's published work from his first known venture into print in 1887 until the cut-off date of 1998. One of the bibliography's major strengths is an emphasis on publishing history. Organized into ten sections, the bibliography describes all editions and issues; Leacock's contributions to books; his serial publications (in newspapers and magazines); reports of his speeches and lectures; lectures given; interviews; authorized adaptations; translations; recordings by Leacock; Braille, talking books and films; encyclopedia articles; and contributions in serial articles and books by others. In addition, there is a section for "Lost Leads," see-references, and a comprehensive index (author, title, and subject). A Bibliography of Stephen Leacock reveals the complexity and scope of Leacock's enormous canon. Based on an in-depth examination of texts and archival documents, this bibliography is a research tool in the true scholarly tradition, a work that will interest Leacock enthusiasts and all students and researchers of Canadian literature and social history.

Sunshine Sketches: R.I.P.
Fifty Years After The Death Of Stephen Leacock, We Ask If Teenagers Find His Famous Prose Amusing. The Answer Is No.
Jim Slotek
Can you file misleading advertising charges against editors? For this first issue of the Sunday Magazine, they asked me to write something about humor, and I bit.
What's the next thing I hear?
"One angle we were thinking of is that March 28 is the 50th anniversary of the death of Stephen Leacock ..."
Whoomp! (There it was, the sound of my crest falling).
It's been 20 years since I studied Sunshine Sketches Of A Little Town under duress. And I may have the whole town of Orillia showing up at my doorstep with torches for saying this, but I never found Canada's Greatest Humorist funny - at least not in the sense that I remember laughing.
You say he's a national treasure, and I believe you. But if Canadians no longer burst out laughing at the folksy ways of the good Orangemen of Mariposa, it's because Stephen Leacock was 'killed' by those five lethal words: You Had To Be There.
Comedy is our highest form of expression (Andrew Dice Clay notwithstanding). It's also a living, breathing thing which can't be preserved over centuries (George Burns notwithstanding). Ideally, you'd have to freeze the people who originally laughed at the jokes and thaw them out to get an authentic chortle - such is the delicate balance of sensibilities, references, lifestyle and almost-molecular-level chemistry that goes into a drink-out-yer-nose laff.

Text from the Stephen Butler Leacock Plaque This internationally-known author and humorist is buried in the churchyard. Born in Swanmore, Hampshire, England, Leacock came with his family to this township in 1876. Graduating from the University of Toronto in 1891, he taught at Upper Canada College and, in 1901, began lecturing in political science at McGill University, heading that department, 1908-1936. Though Leacock wrote extensively on political science, economics and history, he achieved his greatest distinction as a humorist. Some of his best work, essentially Canadian in character and spirit, may be found in "Literary Lapses", "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town" and "Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich". Leacock's many humorous books, in English and in translation, have won world-wide recognition. Home Subject Directory Location Directory Search ... Contact Me
