"Carmilla," the 1970 chamber opera with script and direction by Wilford Leach and music by Ben Johnston, performed by The E.T.C. Company of La MaMa, was the progenitor of multi-media in theater. With a nod to these two "firsts" and to share its seminal production with a new generation of theatergoers, La MaMa will re-mount its famed "Carmilla," featuring most of the original company, with musical direction by Zizi Mueller, from April 10 to 27 in its Annex Theater. Ellen Stewart will direct the original staging by Wilford Leach.

Uncle Silas
- Book Review, by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
Book Description

J. Sheridan LeFanu's Silas is the dark doppelganger to his brother Austin Ruthyn. When Austin dies and his daughter Maud is sent to live with her brooding uncle, the creeping, horrible nature of Silas' character unfolds. Addicted to laudanum and prey to inexplicable visions, Silas appears like a spirit to his neice Maud. Silas has his own plans for Maud and the fortune she will inherit. Uncle Silas is LeFanu's best-known novel, dealing with themes of spiritualism, secret corruption, greed, lust, and other peculiar Victorian obsessions. A classic novel of spiritual terror by opne of the true masters of the form.

Uncle Silas
- Book Reviews, by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
Uncle Silas FROM THE PUBLISHER "From the moment that Madame de la Rougierre is hired as governess to the young, naive Maud Ruthyn, a dark cloud of foreboding hangs over the entire household. A liar, a bully and a spy, Madame eventually leaves, taking her dark secret with her." "But unhappily for Maud, that is not the last of Madame de la Rougierre. For when Maud is orphaned she is sent to live with her Uncle Silas, her father's mysterious brother, a man with a scandalous - even murderous - past. Here she encounters Madame once more. This time her sinister role in Maud's destiny is all too clear." "With its subversion of reality and illusion and its depiction of the 'filmy layers' of Maud's passions and fears, Uncle Silas goes beyond the bounds of the conventional horror story to become a chilling psychological thriller."BOOK JACKET.
