To the Editor: The old adage that you can’t believe everything you read in the paper has certainly been proven this past week. Steve Miller’s front-page article from Tuesday, February 19th “HDC puts brakes on demolition of downtown garage” is full of inflammatory accusations yet strikingly devoid of accurate reporting. The garages at 29 E. Fifth St. do not block access to the rest of the property as stated, nor does their existence prevent the continuation or improvement of off-street parking. It seems that Mr. Miller and his editor think it will sell more newspapers if he portrays the HDC as being against needed parking, but that is simply not true.

Thus the theme is set for the latest novel in this mystery series as it compares and contrasts the fallout wrought by world warfare and gang warfare. Ladslaw Kolankiewicz, arms expert and longtime friend, insists on teaching Troy how to defend himself. So even though Troy believes in an unarmed police force, he spends weeks becoming proficient in every handgun available because Kolankiewicz does not want to see him shot to death. Troy is surrounded by many such close friends and they remain together over the years as the novel picks up again in 1959. It is then that one of his best mates is killed by a car bomb blast and Troy is injured as well. While on sick leave he spends an inordinate amount of time in bed, and not alone. Not only is he separated from his wife, but his lover, Foxx, hands him an ultimatum, and he is comforted by his doctor, Anna, in very non-medical fashion. Then along comes his old flame from America, who is now the wife of a presidential hopeful, but all Kate wants to do is spark up Troy again. Whew. The first half of FLESH WOUNDS reads like a soap opera with tiny bubbles of the mystery barely visible. Even after mutilated bodies start showing up, the investigation takes a back seat to simultaneous affairs, historical detours and various manipulations designed to get Troy to intervene with his Opposition Party Leader brother, Rod, for political favors. But once our Chief Superintendent becomes serious about getting to the bottom of things, we are offered an excellent look at the police work that has made Scotland Yard a force to be reckoned with.

My favorites are the two novels set during World War II, "Bluffing Mr. Churchill" and "Black Out," which capture the drama and heroism of wartime London, but the novels set later are grand entertainment as well. Over 20-plus years we see Troy advance from sergeant to chief superintendent, confront many challenges from spies, gangsters and politicians, and deal somewhat less successfully with the often ill-chosen women in his life, including one wartime lover, Lady Diana Brack, whom he was forced to shoot dead as she was shooting at him. A policeman's lot is not a happy one.

Rhead's early years in Stoke-on-Trent Arequipa vase by Roseville Pottery Fred Rhead moved to the United States in 1902, where he worked as a designer for a number of art potteries, notably the Weller Pottery and the Roseville Pottery, both at Zanesville, Ohio. Fred's early art pottery employed the he multi-coloured slips, low-relief carving and modelling which were typical Staffordshire techniques. People's University For three years at St Louis, Fred Rhead worked with Taxile Doat (1851-1938). Doat was a Frenchman, trained at Sevres, who became Director of the University City Pottery, which was run by the American Woman's University. Fred was an instructor in pottery at the People's University which mainly operated through correspondence courses - Fred created a pottery course for them in 1910.
