http://www.msp.umb.edu/NB Directory.htm
[Gentle Reader: I have used this data, extracted from the 1838 New Bedford City Directory, to give students an introduction to how primary sources might be used. We start with Jef Bolster’s book Black Jacks, and used the Directory to “check his work.” The assignment is easily adaptable to different grade levels. Below is the assignment, taken verbatim from the syllabus, and after that the data. Have fun.] New Bedford Directory Project (due April 18): Your assignment is to create an occupational “snapshot” of New Bedford ’s black population in 1838. Using the data from the 1838 New Bedford directory (at Reserve/Circulation desk), provide 1) a breakdown of all pertinent entries by occupation ; 2) then tabulate the number of all these who apparently dwelt in houses , and those who “boarded.” Fit this data into two tables on one page. On two subsequent pages, discuss your findings, especially with regard to that portion of the sample connected with maritime life. Address the following questions in the course of your discussion: What proportion of the sample are engaged in maritime occupations?

19. 99-131 Abuse Of Ch Abuse
Frederick Lawton says there is now hysteria surrounding the whole subject ofpaedophilia Sir Frederick Lawton is a retired lord justice of appeal

[Doc. List E7] 99-131 Doc
The Abuse of Child Abuse
The Spectator, Nov 1, 1997 Frederick Lawton Frederick Lawton says there is now hysteria surrounding the whole subject of paedophilia HAVE paedophiles in present-day demonology come to occupy the same role as witches did in that of the 16th and 17th centuries? So far this year there has been disorder in Aberdeen, Stirling and Swindon as a result of mobs gathering outside the homes of convicted sex offenders who had been released from prison after serving their sentences. The Swindon paedophile was driven from his home there and from four other addresses. He felt obliged to seek refuge with the Brighton police. The hysteria which brought about these unseemly and disturbing happenings has incited the Home Office to introduce restrictions on convicted paedophiles over and above those imposed by the courts when passing sentence. Under the Sex Offenders Act 1997 they are obliged to tell the police where they are living. The Home Secretary has recently announced that there will be legislation to exclude them from places where there are likely to be children playing or assembling. All this has a whiff of the restrictions which were imposed on lepers during the Middle Ages and on Jews in Nazi Germany. What danger do convicted paedophiles present to young children? Clearly some.

IT'S A BANCFIRST HOME EQUITY LOAN SALE
READ THE FINE PRINT*
Look around and compare the fine print on home equity loans. BancFirst encourages you to read the fine print* on our home equity loan sale because it's all good.
A BancFirst home equity loan offers:
  • Loan amounts up to 100% Loan to Value No minimum loan amount 5-year loan term No introductory teaser rate – your interest rate is fixed at 6.75% for the term of the loan.
Whatever your goal, a Home Equity Loan is a smart way to borrow. Interest rates are going up so act now.
And, by the way, here's our fine print: * THE FINE PRINT: Offer available with approved credit. Loan example – $20,000 loan at 6.75% APR for 60 months would have a payment of only $393.72. Property insurance is required and flood hazard insurance may be required. You probably have that anyway, so read on for even better fine print. This is not a teaser rate; your rate will stay 6.75% for the entire 60 mos., not just the first 3 months. We pay all your closing costs and we really mean that. Don't even bring your checkbook to closing. You can use the loan money for anything you want: home repair or remodel; college tuition; pay off high-interest rate credit cards; dream wedding; vacation adventure; new boat ... whatever floats your boat (that was funny “fine print”). You can get this rate at any statewide BancFirst location. We told you the fine print was worth reading because it is all good. Now come in and get that loan before this special rate expires September 30, 2005.
