HENRY LAWSON
Henry Lawson was an Australian poet and writer. Many believe he was the first poet to capture the Australian way of life.
And today, Henry Lawson's work is an inspiration to many Australians.
(Poem read aloud)
""The ladies are coming", the super says to the shearers sweltering there,
and 'the ladies' means in the shearing shed..."don't cut 'em too bad. Don't swear."
The ghost of a pause in the shed's rough heart,
and lower is bowed each head,
then nothing is heard save a whispered word,
and the roar of the shearing shed."

Henry Lawson was born in 1867, on a goldfield in rural New South Wales.
His father was mining there, and times were tough. The Lawsons were very poor. Henry didn't get a good education, but his mother gave him lots of books. Henry was a shy, sensitive child. He wasn't like most bush boys. Even his mother thought he was a bit strange. When he was nine years of age, Henry got an ear infection and went partly deaf. By the time he was fourteen years old he was totally deaf. The kids at school tormented Henry and he became more of a loner. But his made him even better at observing people...looking at the way they act.

MIDDLETON'S ROUSEABOUT by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922)
Tall and feckled and sandy, Face of a country lout; This was the picture of Andy, Middleton's Rouseabout.
Type of a coming nation, In the land of cattle and sheep, Worked on Middleton's station, "Pound a week and his keep".
On Middleton's wide dominions Plied the stockwhip an' shears; Hadn't any opinions, Hadn't any "idears".
Swiftly the years went over, Liquor and drouth prevailed; Middleton went as a drover, After his station had failed.
Type of a careless nation, Men who are soon played out, Middleton was - and his station Was bought by the Rouseabout.
Flourishing beard and sandy, Tall and robust and stout; This is the picture of Andy, Middleton's Rouseabout.
Now on his own dominions Works with his overseers; Hasn't any opinions, Hasn't any "idears".

THE SONG OF OLD JOE SWALLOW by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922)
When I was up the country in the rough and early days, I used to work along ov Jimmy Nowlett's bullick-drays; Then the reelroad wasn't heered on, an' the bush was wild an' strange, An' we useter draw the timber from the saw-pits in the range ~ Load provisions for the stations, an' we'd travel far and slow Through the plains an' 'cross the ranges in the days of long ago.
Then it's yoke up the bullicks and tramp beside 'em slow, An' saddle up yer horses an' a-ridin' we will go, To the bullick-drivin', cattle-drovin', Nigger, digger, roarin', rovin' Days o' long ago.
Once me and Jimmy Nowlett loaded timber for the town, But we hadn't gone a dozen mile before the rain come down, An' me an' Jimmy Nowlett an' the bullicks an' the dray Was cut off on some risin' ground while floods around us lay; An' we soon run short of tucker an' terbaccer, which was bad, An' pertaters dipped in honey was the only tuck we had.
An' half our bullicks perished when the drought was on the land, An' the burnin' heat that dazzles as it dances on the sand; When the sun-baked clay an' gravel paves for miles the burnin' creeks, An' at ev'ry step yer travel there a rottin' carcase reeks - But we pulled ourselves together, for we never used ter know What a feather bed was good for in those days o' long ago.

Andy's Gone with Cattle
by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922)
Our Andy's gone to battle now
'Gainst Drought, the red marauder;
Our Andy's gone with cattle now
Across the Queensland border. He's left us in dejection now;
Our hearts with him are roving;
It's dull on this selection now,
Since Andy went a-droving. Who now shall wear the cheerful face
In times when things are slackest?
And who shall whistle round the place
When Fortune frowns her blackest? Oh, who shall cheek the squatter now When he comes round us snarling? His tongue is growing hotter now Since Andy crossed the Darling. The gates are out of order now, In storms the "riders" rattle; For far across the border now Our Andy's gone with cattle. Poor Aunty's looking thin and white; And Uncle's cross with worry; And poor old Blucher howls all night Since Andy left Macquarie. Oh, may the showers in torrents fall, And all the tanks run over; And may the grass grow green and tall In pathways of the drover; And may good angels send the rain On desert stretches sandy;

and Dorothea Mackellar spring to mind.
This is just a very small collection of their works. Andrew Barton ('Banjo') Paterson Andrew Barton Paterson (1864 - 1941) was most famous for his stirring Bush Ballads . 'The Banjo', the name of a racehorse his father once owned, was the pen-name used by Paterson when he began contributing verses to The Bulletin, an influential newspaper of the time. His first big success was 'Clancy of the Overflow' which appeared in 1889. Paterson was born 17 February 1864, at Narambla, New South Wales. He was the son of a Scottish immigrant and the eldest of seven children. His younger years were spent near Yass in NSW. He attended Sydney Grammar School, but left at the age of 16. Paterson sat unsuccessfully for a university scholarship and entered a lawyer's office as an articled clerk - later becoming managing clerk and then a partner in the firm, Street and Paterson. Banjo Paterson was commissioned by the Sydney Morning Herald and became a successful journalist and war correspondent during the Boer War in 1899, and the Boxer Rebellion in China, in 1901.

Nearly four decades after the events at Eureka Stockade, Henry Lawson marked the death of the battle's leader, Peter Lalor, with an anti-establishment piece of verse, 'Eureka!'. In this and other poems such as his first, 'The Republic', 'The Fight of Eureka Stockade' and 'Freedom of the Wallaby', Lawson may well have been trying to light the fire of Australian nationalism and a move to independence with our own flag, The Southern Cross.
At the Victorian mining site of Eureka, Lalor led miners in battle against government troops over the cost of licences and other issues. Thirty-four miners and six troops died at Eureka Stockade, in what is seen by some as a battle for the 'concept of fair play and equal opportunity' (Heritage website). Some get more passionate: the National republicans describe it as a 'patriotic struggle bathed in Australian blood' (alphalink website). The miners also carried a blue and white Southern Cross flag which has become an important anti-establishment symbol. Lalor, who lost an arm, and the other survivors were acquitted. He went on to become a Member of the Legislative Council and was its Speaker when he died in 1889.

Biography of Henry Lawson
Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922)
Henry Lawson (17 June 1867, Grenfell goldfields, New South Wales - 2 September 1922, Sydney) was an Australian writer and poet. Lawson and his contemporary Banjo Patterson are the best-known Australian fiction writers of the colonial period. His mother was Louisa Lawson 1848 - 1920, a prominent suffragist and owner/editor of The Dawn journal which was partly responsible for Australia becoming one of the first countries to attain adult female suffrage. His father was Niels Larsen, a Norwegian seaman who settled in Australia; on Henry's birth, the family surname was anglicised and Niels became Peter Lawson. Henry suffered an ear infection at the age of seven that left him with partial deafness and by the age of fourteen he had lost his hearing entirely. Most of his works focuses on the Australian bush, such as the desolate Past Carin ’, and is considered by some to be among the first accurate descriptions of Australian life as it was at the time. It should be noted, however, that even then the majority of Australians lived in cities like Lawson himself; the bush that Lawson depicted housed only a small minority.
