And my dearest friends are certain that I d profit in the end If I d always showmy copy to a literary friend. Lawson, Henry 18671922
http://users.bigpond.net.au/aussieconnection/friend.html
My Literary Friend ONCE I wrote a little poem which I thought was very fine,
And I showed the printer's copy to a critic friend of mine,
First he praised the thing a little, then he found a little fault;
‘The ideas are good,’ he muttered, ‘but the rhythm seems to halt.'
So I straighten up the rhythm where he marked it with his pen,
And I copied it and showed it to my clever friend again.
‘You've improved the metre greatly, but the rhymes are bad,’ he said,
As he read it slowly, scratching surplus wisdom from his head.
So I worked as he suggested (I believe in taking time),
And I burnt the ‘midnight taper’ while I straightened up the rhyme.
‘It is better now,’ he muttered, ‘you go on and you'll succeed,
‘It has got a ring about it — the ideas are what you need.’
So I worked for hours upon it (I go on when I commence),
And I kept in view the rhythm and the jingle and the sense, And I copied it and took it to my solemn friend once more — It reminded him of something he had somewhere read before.

Charles Dickens
Autograph letter from Dickens to "Mr Gibson", Dover, Seventh September, 1852. 1p, fold, 18 x 11.5cm.
Dickens apologises for not availing himself of (John) Gibson's proposal whilst in Newcastle "and even from answering the note until now - in his first leisure moment". Together with a note dated January 7th 1914 stating the letter's provenance. Charles Dickens (1812-1870), perhaps England's greatest novelist, combined his literary career with a variety of social and theatrical interests.
Ernest Hemmingway
Autograph letter signed, from Hemingway to Rupert (?),sending Christmas greetings from Idaho, c.1950s. A Unicef greetings card, the note written sideways across the fold, signed "Ernesto", 1p. Mounted together with contemporary deckle-edge photograph of the Hemingways, c.1950s.
Hemingway's note, written below a note from Mary Hemingway - "Back to Cuba in Feb" - reads in part: "Have been working here and shooting since October 5th. Book going very well… We are settled here until end February. Things different in Cuba now…" Perhaps Hemingway was working on The Old Man and the Sea (1952), or a short story? Other Hemingway (1899-1961) photographs and ephemera are available at the Gallery.

Reviews of Priscilla Herdman Compact Discs
Priscilla Herdman is a unique folk artist, with a lyrical and lustrous voice, pure, soft and melodious. She has been my favorite singer - of any genre - for over fifteen years now, since I heard her first album Water Lily in the 1980's. The songs she sings are haunting poems which linger in your memory long after you have turned your stereo off. Each new Priscilla Herdman CD is an eagerly anticipated work of art. She often combines her lovely voice with two other exceptionally fine folk singers: long-time friends Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen. Some musicians of note who appear on her record labels are Jay Ungar (composer "Ashoken Farewell"), playing fiddle and mandolin, Abby Newton, cello, Artie Traum, guitar, Mark Rust, string guitars, and Scott Petito and Donald Sosin, piano, and other instruments as well. Their exceptional accompaniment adds sustained beauty to the perfection of her voice. Because Priscilla Herdman is an independent folk artist, her CD 's are not easily found in typical record and music stores. At the bottom of this page I will list several sources where you can find Priscilla's music, both through the mail and online. Meanwhile, please enjoy some audio samples of Priscilla Herdman folk music below. Folk music is experiencing a renewal in popularity today, and for good reason: it speaks to the yearning within all of us for a place of peace and tranquility where we can feel safe and protected and loved. ~ This web page is best viewed at a high monitor resolution ~

poems of Henry Lawson the great Australian People s Poet (18671922).Four of the Henry Lawson selections have tunes composed by Priscilla Herdman.

"Priscilla Herdman is one of the clearest and most compelling voices of contemporary folk music." Stephen Holden, The New York Times "Excellent taste in material and an elegant, pitch-perfect voice." Rolling Stone "At the center of her charms is that voice....her voice is miraculously pure and effortlessly beautiful, a voice that immediately draws people in and wins them over" Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe "Herdman is gifted with a rich, almost opulent timbre. She reminds one a bit of Judy Collins; both have similarly impeccable enunciation and seemingly effortless deliveries. But Herdman's overall artistry seems considerably more intimate, personal and, at times, esoteric." The Philadelphia Inquirer The Road Home - May 2003 - Redwing Music RWMCD5412
