LAWSON, HENRY (1867-1922) Henry Lawson is perhaps, alongside Banjo Paterson, Australia's best known poet and storyteller. Born on 17 June 1867 near Grenfell, New South Wales, of struggling gold field parents and afflicted for most of his life with deafness - and later alcoholism - he epitomised the radical, nationalist and white-settler bush literary tradition of the 1890s.
His first poem, A song of the Republic , is an appeal for a new Australian social order and appeared in the Sydney Bulletin of October 1887. Prose and other poetic pieces also appeared in the same magazine (and many other journals and newspapers) until his death. These were collected into books which were, and continue to be, very popular - particularly While the Billy Boils (1896) and Joe Wilson and his Mates
The republican Lawson of the Federation era became an enthusiastic supporter of Australia's connection with the British Empire during and after World War 1. His radicalism is defined in Manning Clark's

Briefly Henry Lawson lived in the country on a selection in Sapling Gully approximately 6 kms. from Mudgee in New South Wales. This area became the setting for many of Lawson's poems and stories. He had a terrific gift of being able to describe the Australian bush. Hampered by deafness at the age of nine and by family problems he left school at the age of 14. His mother Louisa Lawson an active feminist instilled in him a love of books this helped compensate for his meagre education.

Above the ashes straight and tall,
Through ferns with moisture dripping,
I climb beneath the sandstone wall,
My feet on mosses slipping. Like ramparts round the valley's edge The tinted cliffs are standing, With many a broken wall and ledge, And many a rocky landing. And round about their rugged feet Deep ferny dells are hidden In shadowed depths, whence dust and heat Are banished and forbidden. The stream that, crooning to itself, Comes down a tireless rover, Flows calmly to the rocky shelf, And there leaps bravely over.

Name: Henry Lawson Birth Date: June 17, 1867 Death Date: September 2, 1922 Place of Birth: Grenfell, Australia Nationality: Australian Gender: Male Occupations: writer, poet Henry Lawson Main Biography Henry Lawson (1867-1922) was an Australian poet and short-story writer. His many stories typify the nationalist period in Australian writing. Henry Lawson was born near the gold-mining center of Grenfell, New South Wales, on June 17, 1867, the son of Peter Hertzberg Larsen; the family adopted the name Lawson when the birth was registered. In 1869 his parents took up a small farm. Having suffered a severe loss of hearing as a lad, Henry Lawson grew up with little education beyond that gained from reading. Bret Harte's stories attracted his interest and influenced him considerably. At 14 he left school and began work. The homesteaders' endless struggle to earn a living from the impoverished land colored the youth's outlook, and his unhappiness was intensified by strained relationships at home. Finally the depredation of droughts in the early 1880s drove the disunited family to Sydney, where young Lawson worked as a house painter. He had developed an ambition to write and at the urging of his mother, Louisa Lawson, began attending night school to further his education. At this point his mother bought out a small journal and trained him to edit it.

Lawson, Henry (1867-1922)

Henry LAWSON (1867-1922) Henry Lawson published his first poem in the nationalist magazine, the Bulletin, in 1887. Called 'A Song for the Republic', it was a stirring call to Australians to approach the new century with courage and commitment to the nation. Debating vehemently with that other bush poet, Banjo Patterson, Lawson was central in the move towards 'realism' in literature. Instead of a gentle, idyllic place, the Australian landscape was depicted as indifferent to its inhabitants, who were battlers - gaunt, tragic, but noble. In the process of arguing the issue, writers established an Australian writing vernacular, and paved the way for a national literature. In his depictions of self-reliant, indomitable, independent Australians, Lawson put into words the qualities that contributed to the nation's sense of self. Although Lawson had a hard and sad life, he was already, by the time of his death, a legend. He was the first Australian writer to be given a State funeral.
