Lake Stevens High School
Welcome ... again ... to the graduation of the class of 2002 ... and a congratulations to you class ... you deserve it. First of all ... thank you class ... I am honored to be chosen to speak tonight and I am truly honored to have been able to spend these last four years ... with all of you. The day has finally arrived. It is June 7th, 2002 ... 7 p.m. It is so hard to believe that this is the day that we have been counting down to for the last few months. This is supposed to be the end of the beginning, the first day of the rest of our lives ... we all seem so set with our future and we seem so sure of exactly what it will foretell. However, regardless of how mature we may think we are ... we are not. We are still so young and new. We have so much to learn. So much more note-taking to take. So many more halls to walk and so many more people to meet. So very few allowed sick days to take. We have so much more space to make mistakes ... but also ... we have the space to correct them. We may be out of the building, friends, but we will be taught and tested for decades to come ... but this time in life. The memories of tonight and these last four years will soon be added with new memories, new friends, new jobs, new loves and relationships, and most important will be a new you. Maybe in the next few years you will be a mom ... or dad, but just maybe you will never have kids. Maybe you will start a career right out of high school, but maybe you will go to school ... hey maybe you will go to school for the rest of your life. But whatever we may become, we can all remember that these last four years have demanded patience ... and have demanded time. The last four years has offered an education ... the last four years has offered friends. The last four years has given a beginning ... but at the same time has given an end. Together we have all endured the loss ... it could have been the loss of a friend ... or it could have been the loss of a classmate ... but with that loss ... we have all provided comfort for one another. The last four years has given us a past.

The Qin-Han Unification of China
I. Description
In geography and cultural advances, the Chinese realm of the Han Dynasty surpassed its predecessors and numbers among the world's greatest empires. This course gives precedence to the foundational philosophies of that empire, examining the Han heritage of ancient thought through a selection of primary texts including the Confucian Analects , the Daodejing , the Yijing , and the historical narrative tradition of Sima Qian's Shiji . It will sample cultural expression ranging from the literary discourse of poetry to the religious endeavors manifested in the emperor's own feng shan sacrifices. Alongside textual studies, this course will also explore the Han's physical remains, including the ruins of its capitals, the Wu Liang shrine, and important tombs. Throughout these textual and physical materials, the Han empire portrays itself as a territorial, political, and cultural unifier, and it sets the benchmark against which all later dynasties must measure themselves.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Lao-tzu The Way of Lao-tzu
Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)
Notes about this Quotation
  • Although this is the popular form of this quotation, a more correct translation from the original Chinese would be "The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one's feet." Rather than emphasizing the first step, Lau Tzu regarded action as something that arises naturally from stillness. Another potential phrasing would be "Even the longest journey must begin where you stand." Join/Renew Long Brevets PBP: Paris-Brest-Paris Others Administration Rules RBAs Records By Kent Peterson I was at the Ludlow control around 5:00 PM on the first day of the 2001 Boston-Montreal-Boston when I declared to Jim Wilson that BMB is a ride designed to make philosophers of us all. "So," he asked, "what then is the meaning of life?" "Life," I replied, "as near as I can tell, is just the same damn thing over and over again!" Indeed it was just one more day, one more road, and one more set of endless hills. Hadn't I put myself through this just last year? But just as it's impossible to swim the same river twice, it's impossible for me to dismiss BMB with a "been there, done that" and pass up the ride. For while I might say, "yes, I know this road" and "yes, I remember that turn", I knew that despite all I'd learned or forgotten, there are more lessons and reasons to ride that become clear only to those of us who let the kilometers unwind beneath our wheels. I don't ride because I'm a randonneur; I'm a randonneur because I ride. Like last year, I rode to the start of BMB from my mother-in-law's house in Pawtucket, RI. Last year, I'd had only the vaguest notion of where I was going and route crudely plotted from a couple of state highway maps. I made the trip in three hours with no wrong turns. This year, armed with state-of-the-art computer-generated maps, I managed to make a couple of wrong turns. Still, I covered the 70-plus kilometers in about three hours.

The Way of Seeing a simple, practical path
Tao Te Ching
"The way is so simple that complicated minds cannot see it."
Lao Tzu
By Ken Lloyd Russell
The Tao Te Ching has been one of my favorite books for decades. I have a fondness and appreciation for Lao Tzu. He feels like an old friend. He was a simple man, yet a profound mystic. He left behind no ponderous treatises, no great band of disciples, just one slim book, the Tao Te Ching . But what a beautiful vision it holds: the essence of simplicity and naturalness. I embrace this man because he has stripped away all the spiritual bullshit and defined the mystic way as simply being natural. This vision of man is stupendous: he is perfectly fine as he is if he were to allow himself to be. This vision is so liberating and so inspiring. Lau Tzu simply says, " That is it. I have found no greater utterance in the whole literature of mysticism, philosophy, or religion. He doesn't tell you what the way is. " The way that can be defined to death is not the Way to Life. " He is wise. Knowing that we cannot speak of that which is beyond the mind, he doesn't even attempt to do so. He merely offers pointers on how to uncomplicate the mind. He tells us to just be still, like allowing muddy water to settle. This is the essence of meditation letting it all wind down. What is left is the purity of being.

When I woke up the next morning I felt completely energized, and so much more positive about life than I had for a long time. I knew I missed that feeling, but it was hard to even recall it after feeling bogged down for such a while. What you gave me was so much more than a reading...it was confirmation that we are supposed to live our lives in joy!
