86. The Fortunes Of War

http://www.deremilitari.org/RESOURCES/ARTICLES/jones1.htm
The fortunes of war: the military career of John, second lord Bourchier (d.1400) By Michael Jones from: Essex Archaeology and History v.26 (1995) ‘And yet time hath his revolution; there must be a period and an end to all temporal things, finis rerun , an end of names and dignities and whatsoever is terrene; and why not of De Vere? For where is Bohun? where's Mowbray? where's Mortimer? nay which is more, and most of all, where is Plantagenet? They are intombed in the urns and sepulchres of mortality. And yet let the name and dignity of De Vere stand so long as it pleaseth God.’ Introduction In this famous comment by the notable seventeenth-century judge, Sir Ranulphe Crewe, during the Oxford peerage case of 1626, he might have also poignantly asked, where is Bourchier? For in 1646, the year he died, the death also occurred of Robert Devereux, earl of Essex, son of Elizabeth I's favourite. This resulted in the extinction of the titles of Viscount and Lord Bourchier, whilst the barony of Bourchier fell into abeyance where today it still technically remains. My intention is not to explain these recondite points of English peerage law but to resuscitate briefly from his `sepulchre of mortality' one particular member of the Bourchier family, because his career, strangely neglected or misconstrued by generations of historians, vividly illustrates the fortunes of war as experienced by one fourteenth-century English noble.

Bosworth ~22 Aug 1485~ The Wars of the Roses was effectively an argument between two lines of the same family. Edward III (1327-1377) died of a Stroke. His third son John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster , had dominated the government during his last years , but Edward was succeeded by his grandson Richard II , only son of Edward, the Black Prince Richard was deposed in 1399 and murdered; and was succeeded by Henry IV , another grandson of Edward III by John of Gaunt Henry IV was succeeded by his son and later his grandson, Henry V and Henry VI . This was the House of Lancaster. Edward III ’s second son was Lionel, Duke of Clarence . His line had not succeeded to the throne after the deposition of Richard II because it was only represented by a single female. His grand daughter, lady Anne Mortimer , married a son of Edmund, Duke of York , the fourth son of Edward III . This was the House of York. By the time Henry VI succeeded to the throne at the age of 8 months this Yorkist line was in the ascendancy and when Henry began to suffer from bouts of madness the senior member of this line

Medieval Sources online from Manchester University Press Medieval sources Women of the English nobility and gentry Enter
Translated and edited by Jennifer Ward While there is increasing interest in the lives of medieval women, the documentary evidence for their private and public activities remains little known. This book provides a collection of sources for an important and influential group of women in medieval England, and examines changes in their role between 1066 and 1500. For most noble and gentry-women, early marriage led to responsibilities for family and household, and in the absence of their husbands, for the family estates and retainers. Widowhood enabled them to take control of their affairs and to play an independent part in the local community and sometimes further afield. Although many women's lives followed a conventional pattern, great variety existed within family relationships, and individuality can also be seen in religious practices and patronage. Piety could take a number of different forms, whether a woman became a nun, a vowess, or a noted philanthropist and benefactor to religious institutes. This collection provides broad-ranging and accessible coverage of the role of noble women in medieval society. It highlights the significant role played by these women within their families, households, estates and communities.
