A collection of Works by one of our favorite contributors. Details on these photos can be seen on the Alumni Page. There will be a journal of our adventures forthcoming after the "big weekend" It looks like my wife Jane, Gary, Debbie Hill, and Sue A will be making the trip as of now. Hazelelponah Wood by Edward Gerrish Mair November, 2003 Plum Island, Massachusetts This fall I made my annual pilgrimage to the Old North Burial Ground in Ipswich Massachusetts arriving an hour before sunset. At this time of day and year, the late afternoon sun lights up the yellow, orange, and red leaves of the stately sugar maples seeming to set them on fire. It is one of the most beautiful and holy spots on earth at such moments. There are always new discoveries to be made in this ancient yard. This year, I was attracted to the highly readable 1714 slate gravestone of a woman with a most unusual name, Hazelelponah Wood. A marker with a death’s head motif in the lunette, the grave marker reads: Haselelpony Wood Widdow of Obadiah Wood died Novem y 27 1714 Aged 78 years Wright Blessed Are y dead w die in y Lord Could this woman be related to my eighth great grandfather, Thomas Wood of Rowley I wondered? Two days later, I picked up a new book in the Newburyport library and quite to my surprise, soon found within a picture of Hazelelponah’s headstone. I then read that this headstone was the work of John Hartshorn of Haverhill

The Original Illustrations for Dickens's "A Holiday Romance" by John Gilbert, Sol Eytinge, and G. G. White in "Our Young Folks, An Illustrated Magazine For Boys and Girls," Vol. IV
Philip V. Allingham , Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University (Canada)
The Plates Charles Dickens's four-part novella for children, A Holiday Romance (1868), is unique among that author's prodigious literary output in four respects: 1. It is narrated by a succession of children who do not, as David Copperfield and Pip do, grow up to acquire adult voices that contain their childhood personas. 2. Although written at roughly the same time as "George Silverman's Explanation" and like it produced for initial American magazine publication, it was intended primarily for a child audience, to whom in many cases (and as Dickens likely anticipated) it was read aloud. 3. It was first published neither in Dickens's own journal nor in one of the many recently-founded British illustrated literary magazines of the 1860s, but rather in a new illustrated American children's magazine, issued monthly.

    THE HOLY GRAIL
The Holy Grail is generally considered to be the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and the one used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch his blood as he hung on the cross. This significance, however, was introduced into the Arthurian legends by Robert de Boron in his verse romance Joseph d'Arimathie (sometimes also called Le Roman de l'Estoire dou Graal ), which was probably written in the last decade of the twelfth century or the first couple of years of the thirteenth. In earlier sources and in some later ones, the grail is something very different. The term "grail" comes from the Latin gradale Parzival Perceval Morte d'Arthur ) do achieve the quest. Tennyson is perhaps the author who has the greatest influence on the conception of the Grail quest for the modern English-speaking world through his Idylls and his short poem "Sir Galahad" . However, James Russell Lowell's "The Vision of Sir Launfal" , one of the most popular of nineteenth-century American poems gave to generations a democratized notion of the Grail quest as something achievable by anyone who is truly charitable. The notion that the Grail story originated in fertility myths was popularized by Jessie Weston in her book From Ritual to Romance , which was used by T. S. Eliot in the writing of
