EARTH POEMS
EARTH POEMS was published by HarperSanFrancisco in 1996.
It represented a re-working of THE GREEN BOOK OF POETRY for a more contemporary American market. Eighty new poems were included.
The book's theme is the destruction of nature by corporations and governments at the behest of a consumerist society. The book was discontinued after selling eight thousand copies in three months: no satisfactory reason given. SOME EXCERPTS FROM 'EARTH POEMS': Li Po was so venerated during his life that the emperor would personally season his soup. But he too needed the company of nature, and he spent most of his life wandering.
Summer in the mountains
Too lazy to shift my white feather fan
I lie naked in the green woods.
Hanging my hat on a rock,
I bare my head to the breeze in the pines.
Silent Night
Moonlight floods the end of my bed.
I wonder, has frost fallen?
Sitting up, I look at the moon.
Lying back, I think of home.

Welcome to
Bibb County, Georgia
The 54th county formed in Georgia, created in 1822 from part of Houston County , was Bibb. It was so named for Dr. William Wyatt Bibb, who lived in Elbert County, and served in the US House of Representatives as well as the US Senate. In 1816, he was appointed governor of the Territory of Alabama and became the first elected governor of that state. The county has two incorporated municipalities: Macon, the county seat, and Payne City. Macon, named after Senator Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina, was incorporated in 1823. North Carolina was the home state of most of the early white settlers in the area. Macon's City Hall served as the temporary state capitol from November, 1864 to March, 1865. Two notable Georgians from Bibb County are Sidney Clopton Lanier (1842-1881), poet, author, and musician, and the late Otis Redding, famous for "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." Macon is also home to Wesleyan College, founded in 1836 as the Georgia Female College. It was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Mercer University is also located in Macon.

"Finally, there is David Ashley White's beguiling carol, 'Into the woods my master went.' This is a very sophisticated setting, which soundsfor all the worldutterly simple. But that is the great test, isn't it? I won't point out the details of David's mastery; that will be an added incentive to buy and perform this great gem either as an anthem or at a Lenten Lessons and Carols Service." AAM Journal, November 2002 Description
Sidney Lanier's moving meditation on the passion of Christ receives a sympathetic treatment, in this two-part anthem by David Ashley White. The setting is straightforward, unpretentious, and therefore deeply moving. Text

Evening Song by Sidney Lanie Look off, dear Love, across the sallow sands,
And mark yon meeting of the sun and sea;
How long they kiss in sight of all the lands,
Ah! longer, longer we. Now, in the sea's red vintage melts the sun
As Egypt's pearl dissolved in rosy wine
And Cleopatra-night drinks all- 'tis done,
Love, lay thine hand in mine. Come forth, sweet stars, and comfort heaven's heart,
Glimmer, ye waves, 'round else unlighted sands;
Oh night! divorce our sun and sky apart-
Never our lips, our hands. Inspirational Posters Sonnets from the Portuguese, XIII by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 - 1861) Wild Nights by Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886) I Gave Myself To Him by Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886) ... HOME

http://www.augustpoetry.org/poets/Lanier.htm
Sidney Clopton Lanier was born February 3, 1842, in Macon, Georgia. Educated at Atlanta's Olglethorpe College, he was fascinated by the writings of Byron, Tennyson, Scott, and other Romantic writers. This fascination, combined with a love of nature acquired while growing up in rural Georgia, eventually led him to a career as a poet and novelist. Before he could make a name for himself as a writer, however, the War Between the States erupted. Lanier immediately enlisted in the Second Georgia Battalion of the Macon Volunteers. He saw action during the Seven Days' Battle and was later captured running blockades between Wilmington, North Carolina, and Bermuda. Released after a year in a prisoner of war camp, Lanier was both impoverished and in poor health. A gifted musician, Lanier left his beloved Georgia and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1873 to become first flutist with the Peabody Orchestra. Occasional appearances on the lecture circuit to supplement his meagre income led to a professorship at John Hopkins University. He died at the age of 39, a victim of tuberculosis contracted during the War. Visit the Links page for Sidney Lanier sites Sidney Lanier

Song of the Chattahoochee
Sidney Lanier
Out of the hills of Habersham,
Down the valleys of Hall, I hurry amain to reach the plain,
Run the rapid and leap the fall,
Split at the rock and together again,
Accept my bed, or narrow or wide,
And flee from folly on every side
With a lover's pain to attain the plain Far from the hills of Habersham,
Far from the valleys of Hall. All down the hills of Habersham,
All through the valleys of Hall, The rushes cried Abide, abide,
The willful waterweeds held me thrall, The laving laurel turned my tide, The ferns and the fondling grass said Stay, The dewberry dipped for to work delay, And the little reeds sighed Abide, abide, Here in the hills of Habersham, Here in the valleys of Hall. High o'er the hills of Habersham, Veiling the valleys of Hall, The hickory told me manifold Fair tales of shade, the poplar tall Wrought me her shadowy self to hold, The chestnut, the oak, the walnut, the pine, Overleaning, with flickering meaning and sign
