The Passion of the Beast
Boston: The Stratford Co., 1928. 30611; PQ3; GL; TDB. An unusual novel, about the strange hold a gorilla exerts on an aristocratic French family. In Paris, William St. Clair meets Armand Dumesnil, who presently asks the American to accompany him to his family estate. There St. Clair meets Armand's beautiful sister, Yvonne, and learns that there is some mystery surrounding the family. He comes to learn that their father, Hippolyte Dumesnil, while on safari, had seen a female gorilla and her children killed by his bearers. He prevented them from killing her mate, whom he captured and named Melek. Melek soon thereafter saved Dumesnil's life, and was brought to live on the family estate. Dumesnil had come to believe that the lives of his own children, Armand and Yvonne, were owed to the ape, who proved to be extremely jealous of any attentions to Yvonne.

Sydney Lanier on Biblical Poetry
Home This passage is from an article called "Moral Purpose in Art," taken from the opening pages of "Sidney Lanier's Last Lecture," Johns Hopkins University, April 1881. It was published posthumously in the May, 1883 issue of Century Magazine. Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was a notable American poet. You can find his works in a good anthology of 19th Century American poetry. I read his "The Marshes of Glynn" and quite enjoyed it. What impresses me about this passage is Lanier's point that unlike most other poetry, Biblical poetry is so translatable. It occurs to me that this is probably exactly what God intended. Now, it is words and their associations which are untranslatable, not ideas; there is no idea , whether originating in a Hebrew, Greek, or other mind, which cannot be adequately produced as idea in English words. The reason why Shakspere and Dante are practically untranslatable is that, recognizing how every word means more than itself to its native users, how every word is like the bright head of a comet drawing behind it a less luminous train of vague associations, which are associations only to those who have used such words from infancy, Shakspere and Dante, I say, have used this fact and have constructed poems which necessarily mean more to native hearers than they can possibly mean to any foreign ear. But this Hebrew poetry which I have mentioned is so purely composed of ideas which are universal, essential, fundamental to the personality of man, instantly recognizable by every soul of every race, that they remain absolutely great, absolutely artistic, in whatever language they are couched.

Select Poems of Sidney Lanier Edited by Morgan Callaway To My Father Preface This edition of the `Select Poems of Sidney Lanier' is issued
in the hope of making his poetry known to wider circles than hitherto,
especially among the students of our high-schools and colleges.
To these as to older people, the poems will, it is believed,
prove an inspiration from the stand-point both of literature and of life. The biographical section of the Introduction rests in the main
upon Dr. Ward's admirable `Memorial' prefixed to the `Poems of Sidney Lanier'
edited by his wife, though a few additional facts have been gleaned here and there. For most* of the Bibliography down to 1888 I am indebted to my Hopkins comrade, Dr. Richard E. Burton, now of Hartford, Conn., who compiled one for the `Memorial of Sidney Lanier', published by President Gilman, of the Johns Hopkins University, in 1888. Obligations to other publications about Lanier are in every instance acknowledged in the appropriate place.

Front Page Editorial Upcoming Events Business ... Dining in Gwinnett Lake Lanier and Buford Dam changed Atlanta
By Sarah Rivera David Coughlin has a special relationship with Lake Sidney Lanier.
He lives about 10 minutes from the lake. Also, Coughlin works nights doing dispatch for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lanier.
The waters of Lake Lanier touch five Georgia counties, including Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin, Hall and Gwinnett. The lake covers 38,000 acres that were once farmland.
In 1946, Congress authorized a development program to put the river to work. The Corps of Engineers was directed to design and build a series of dams and lakes along the Chattahoochee River. This river starts in North Georgia, flows southward along the Alabama and Georgia state line, then travels into Florida, where its name changes to the Appalachicola. It eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
Construction of Buford Dam and the three smaller adjacent dams called saddle dikes began in 1953. They were built of raw earth instead of concrete to keep costs low. The main dam is 192 feet high and 2,360 feet long. The total length of the saddle dike system is 6,600 feet. On the west side of the main dam, a large concrete building called the Powerhouse was constructed in a depression excavated from solid rock. Completed in 1956, the Powerhouse contains the machinery necessary to produce electricity and to regulate the flow of water released from the lake back into the Chattahoochee River. Although construction of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier was essentially completed in 1956, it took two more years for the lake to fill up with water. When full, the authorized purposes including power production, water supply, navigation and flood control could be fully realized.
