The NCAA Chicago Regional: Anything But a Trip Down Memory Lane...
    By Anne Ryan, ZR Images
Arizona's Jawann McClellan sits and cries as Illinois' Dee Brown and the rest of the team celebrate after University of Illinois defeated University of Arizona 90-89 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship game at the Allstate Arena.
Growing up in Chicago I was used to the climate of disappointment in local sports teams. Every year we still have so much hope early in the season. At the beginning of every Cubs season we start hearing, "This is the year" only to be subjected to a season of our team dwelling near the bottom of the heap or to come to the brink of a championship and then lose in the end. We savor our rare, actual championships. We've gotten 20 years of mileage out of the 1985 Bears and the Super Bowl Shuffle. You can't say we don't appreciate a winning team here.
Things haven't changed that much for the Cubs or Bears, but luckily in the 1990s Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls changed things enough that the term "Losers" doesn't apply to every team in the state of Illinois anymore.

      Ann Lane's Dissertation
      By Nathan Williams
Mr. Williams is an intern at HNN. Click here for Ann Lane's response to this article. EDITOR'S NOTE After the Doris Kearns Goodwin and Stephen Ambrose stories broke earlier this year, HNN received an email from a reader about a historian who had allegedly plagiarized parts of her dissertation at Columbia University some thirty years ago. The historian was Ann Lane, who currently is the director of the Studies in Women and Gender program at the University of Virginia. We investigated and discovered that questions had indeed been raised about Lane's dissertation a short time after she had received her degree, though no official body had ever concluded that she was guilty of plagiarism. The historian herself admitted inadvertently copying passages from others, but insisted it wasn't plagiarism.
After gathering some basic facts, we decided to go ahead with the research for an article, thinking that the public would benefit from a story that explored the question of copying by an academic in a monograph, which raised different issues than the stories about copying by popularizers like Goodwin and Ambrose, which were being fully explored on HNN and in the media.

Copies of the book may be obtained (as of August 2004) by forwarding $29.95 plus a $4.50 mail and handling fee to Thomas Davies, 58 Beacon Hill Lane, New Canaan, CT 06480. Artists of Cape Ann: A 150 Year Tradition by Kristian Davies (above: front cover of book) From the dust cover of the book:
Jutting out into the Atlantic, 25 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts, is Cape Ann. For more than 150 years painters have visited the quaint and rustic towns that make up this unique area including Gloucester, Rockport, Annisquam, Magnolia, Essex, and Lanesville. Cape Ann has been host to many of the very best, most celebrated artists in America, from nineteenth-century greats Fitz Hugh Lane, Winslow Homer, and William Morris Hunt, to Impressionists Childe Hassam, John H. Twachtman, and Willard Metcalf, to Ashcan painters and Modernists, Edward Hopper, John Sloan, Stuart Davis, and Marsden Hartley.
The Cape Ann area has for years offered artists a superb range of subject matter such as majestic ships of old in Gloucester Harbor, crashing seascapes, sandy beaches, sculpted granite quarries, and woodlands that present a different scene with every changing season.

Editor's note: The following article was reprinted in Resource Library on May 26, 2005 with the permission of the author. Mr. Law's article was written in conjunction with the exhibition titled Sculptors of Cape Ann: From Medals to Monuments, held September 25, 1997 - October 25, 1997 at the Rockport Art Association, Rockport, MA. If you have questions or comments regarding the article, please contact Mr. Law c/o Traditional Fine Arts Organization. Sculptors of Cape Ann By Steven Law A drive around Cape Ann, Boston's north shore, takes one past several coastal scenes made famous in paintings by such artists as Winslow Homer, Fitz Hugh Lane, Childe Hassam, Aldro Hibbard, Emile Gruppe, and Anthony Thieme. But the area's rocky shores and quarries were also home to a group of celebrated sculptors featured in Sculptors of Cape Ann: From Medals to Monuments . Included in this exhibition are works by Paul Manship, Walker Hancock, Katharine Lane Weems, George Demetrios, Franz Denghausen (all former students of Charles Grafly); George Aarons, Richard Recchia, Albert Atkins, and Ulysses Ricci (former students of Bela Pratt); Leonard Craske, Clyde Bathhurst, Anthony De Francisi and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Although some of these sculptors had Cape Ann roots, others moved there to attend the summer studios of their teachers. Some were captivated by the shore's wildness and natural beauty; some came for the fellowship of renowned sculptors.

WORDS AND ACTIONS Derek Humphry is a journalist and author who has spent the last twenty years campaigning for lawful physician-assisted dying to be an option for the terminally and hopelessly ill. He started this campaign in l975 after the death of his first wife, Jean, from bone cancer which had become so painful and distressing that she took her own life with his help. Born on April 29, l930, in Bath, England, of a British father and an Irish mother, he was raised on the Mendip Hills in Somerset. His education was slender because of a broken home followed by the l939-45 war when most English schools were in chaos. He attended perhaps a dozen different schools, leaving at age 15 intent on pursuing a career in journalism.
