In Remembrance of 1Lt. Sharon Lane Taps... "Day is done, gone the sun, From the lakes, from the hills, From the skies, All is well, safely rest. God is nigh" 1Lt. Sharon Ann Lane died from a shrapnel wound when the 312th Evac at Chu Lai was hit by rockets on June 8, 1969. From Canton, OH, she was a month short of her 26th birthday. She was posthumously awarded the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Bronze Star for Heroism. In 1970, the recovery room at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver was dedicated in her honor. In 1973, Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH, where Lane had attended nursing school, erected a bronze statue of Lane. The names of 110 local servicemen killed in Vietnam are on the base of the statue. His research interests focus on adolescent patients with type 1 diabetes, including psychological aspects of their behaviour and care, and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. In 2003, Adrian is spending 12 months on sabbatical in Hamilton, New Zealand. Mr Samuel Gray Sam Gray is a Research Scientist who oversees the laboratory research programmes within the Division and has particular expertise in molecular and PCR techniques for monitoring changes in gene expression. SG is involved in the supervision of laboratory based MD and BMedSci students, and has established a number of techniques within the laboratory involving PCR analysis, cell culture and measurement of in vitro glucose uptake and endothelial permeability. His current work centres on the regulation of angiogenesis in peripheral arterial disease. In particular, he has gained considerable experience with laser doppler fluximetry and iontophoresis of ACh and SNP to assess cutaneous microvascular vasodilator activity in patients with arterial and venous disorders. This work is part of a broader collaboration with the Vascular Surgical Unit at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary to find non-invasive methods of predicting tissue breakdown and ulceration in the lower limb.
