ISBN 0-451-20036-5
Dear Madam Spider (a.k.a. Ms Editor), All right, already I liked it. Actually, a miracle occurred and I didn't just like it, I loved it. I know you're shocked, but you'll get over it. I haven't the faintest idea whether the authors got the ball gowns, day gowns, men's pants (or whatever the heck they call them) right. But I do know that they created wonderful characters people I liked and would really like to get to know better. Take Charles Mortimer in "The Background Man," by Carla Kelly. As the temporary manager of Sir Michael Moseley's newly constructed Grand Hotel, Mortimer bows, scrapes, toadies and generally goes through life following Sir Michael's rulebook. He doesn't even take his day off, off! The man has no life. Then one sunny day a certain miss walks into the Grand's lobby and wham, the next thing we know ol' rulebook Mortimer throws his rulebook into the trash. Then some really shocking things start to happen.

MOTHER RAGE: THEORY AND PRACTICE
BY ANNE LAMOTT I just wanted to thank Anne Lamott for her column on mother rage. I cried and laughed (mostly laughed) as I read about myself as a mother. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jennifer Sinclair
Wichita, Kan. I loved Annie Lamott's article. As a mother of two children, both under 3, it rang so true. It was great to read about feelings and emotions that I have felt so many times but could never express so eloquently. Chesca Colloredo-Mansfeld I t's a pity no one wrote this article 20 years ago, so that Anne Lamott might have been able to refer to it before becoming pregnant. She might be a happier, less resentful person. I suspect at this point the best thing would be a nanny. Darren Barefoot W hen Anne Lamott talks of this, she speaks for all mothers as far as I'm concerned. I'm a single mother with four kids, and sometimes I think I am a crazy woman. Three of my kids are teenagers. (If you think little kids drive you crazy, it's nothing compared to teenagers!) My youngest one is 6 years old. I like to think of myself as a "good" mother, but sometimes I wonder! First of all, when I come home from work and find the house totally trashed, and the teenagers out on the back patio smoking cigarettes, I go into a rage! I am suddenly this madwoman, yelling and ranting and raving and kicking all "extra" children out of my house. Nobody at work would believe it if they saw me like this! My younger son's therapist says that the key to parenting teenagers is to remain calm at all times. Ha! Like I can stay calm when my kids tell me I'm dumb and I don't know anything.

Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Sources
on which my book, I on Myself Can Live, is based. I include:
a list of all the manuscripts which contain handwritten copies of Ann's poems, both those which were openly attributed to her in print and those which were not. In an appendix to my book I will include a list of the unattributed poems and arguments for attribution. For now the list and arguments may be found in my chronology of Ann's poems (which includes all Ann's poems, a brief description of them, their earliest printing history, all the various anthologies they have appeared in, and their sources if they are translations or imitations or allusive). a list of all 20th century editions of Ann's poetry, none of which are complete. (I have now been able to include the most recent partial edition of Ann's poetry by Barbara McGovern and Charles Hinnant.) a list of those secondary sources which directly relate to Ann or her family members and close friends and the places where she lived. Here are also those critical and scholarly essays and books which have been written about her or her life thus far.

    Ann Lane's Response
    By Ann Lane
Ms. Lane is the director of the Studies in Women and Gender program at the University of Virginia. Editor's Note : After Nathan Williams completed his article we sent it over to Ann Lane to give her an opportunity to correct any errors and to draft a response. She emailed us a statement and sent the article to her friend Sandi Cooper. After hearing back from Lane and Cooper we made several changes and gave Lane a chance to revise her statement. The revised statement, which was dated November 4, appears below. An editor's response to her response follows. Charges of plagiarism in the historical profession are poisonous and often sensational, so I very much appreciate the opportunity to address what I believe is a prejudicial and not entirely accurate account of an incident that took place more than thirty years ago and that in no sense can be labeled plagiarism. Rick Shenkman, editor of HNN and someone with whom I have had what I thought was a candid series of e-mail communications and one very lengthy phone call, wrote: "I think you will agree that the piece is written in a very objective straightforward manner." I do not agree. The purpose of this HNN 'expose' remains obscure and baffling, and the reportage often misleading, incomplete and inaccurate.

The Great Pretender
How a Writer Fooled His Readers by Ann Reilly Dowd
Dowd, a free-lancer, is former Washington bureau chief of Money and Fortune "We're going to Bethesda," Charles Lane, the editor of The New Republic, told Stephen Glass, the writer of a May 18 story, "Hack Heaven," that was being called factually challenged by reporters over at Forbes Digital Tool, the Forbes magazine Web site. And in Bethesda, Maryland, at the building where Glass had supposedly covered a computer-hackers' convention, Lane says his twenty-five-year-old star gave "the most detailed step-by-step account" of where he had sat, and with whom he had spoken. It was only when Lane reminded him that the building's log and security videos would show who was actually there that day that Glass broke down and sobbed. Yes, he confessed, he had made up the conference. In truth, Lane says, the entire article had been created "out of whole cloth." So, it turns out, were others. Stephen Glass was a bright, prolific writer and prodigious reporter. He had a likable demeanor, an eye for detail, and an ear for language. He also had a fatal flaw a stunning lack of integrity. At his firing, Lane recalls Glass pleading: "Do you hate me? Do you hate me?" "I don't wish him ill," Lane says now. "I don't wish him death. I just don't want him to be in journalism."

THE CHARLOTTE PERKINS GILMAN READER is an anthology of fiction by one of America's most important feminist writers. Probably best known as the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper," in which a woman is driven mad by chauvinist psychiatry, Gilman wrote numerous other short stories and novels reflecting her radical socialist and feminist view of turn-of-the-century America. Collected here by noted Gilman scholar Ann J. Lane are eighteen stories and fragments, including a selection from Herland, Gilman's feminist Utopia. The resulting anthology provides a provocative blueprint to Gilman's intellectual and creative production. Reviews

South July 2002 Return on Investment or ROI is what we make on what we invest. If we buy a $30,000 rental unit with our own money and rent it for $435 per month ($100 per week), we receive 1.45% per month ROI. This is a net return, if we have no costs of renting, such as vacancy, depreciation, interest, maintenance, management, etc. If we could get 1.45% per month with no costs, we would be doing nothing short of fantastic. But renting always has costs. If we can hold the costs to 20% of the income, we still get a very nice ROI of 1.16% per month, or nearly 14% per year (80% of 435 is $348. $348/$30,000 = 1.16%). This is especially good in today's investment climate.
