Diane Lane savors career role in 'Unfaithful'
(R) *** By Jon Niccum Wednesday, May 8, 2002 Since appearing on the cover of Time magazine at the age of 14 under the heading "Hollywood Whiz Kids," Diane Lane has enjoyed a steady film career. Steady but not outstanding. She's found leading parts in major films that didn't live up to commercial expectations ("The Cotton Club," "The Outsiders") and starred in blockbusters where her thankless roles were merely window dressing ("A Perfect Storm"). Now in her late 30s, the New York-bred actress has spent the last few years playing moms and schoolteachers in lackluster pictures ("Hardball," "The Glass House") that didn't capitalize on her many talents. "Unfaithful" may change all that.

From the Governor General’s Literary Award finalist!
“The everyday is transformed into hyperrealist flashes, and relationships are broken down into fragments of writing imprinted with a nostalgia as engaging as love.”
Conversations “Complex ellipses develop pictures in halftones and trace the precarious imprints left by fragmented encounters, in a series of lightning-quick glimpses into fragile psyches.” Réincarnations Winner of the inaugural David Adams Richards Prize, Postcards from Ex-Lovers is a collection of flash fiction from the lives of women who need to move on. The stories pull apart the clichés passed between lovers, catch bits of gossip from cafés across the street from a historical monument, and replay old refrains. Offering an edgy but not-quite-jaded look at relationships at the turn of the new century, Jo-Anne Elder gives postcard stories a woman’s voice and introduces business card fiction. Jo-Anne Elder was born in Hamilton, ON, to Scottish-Canadian parents from Bathurst, NB, and Sault Ste. Marie, ON, raised in Burlington, ON. Elder studied French at Trent (in Peterborough, 1975-1979) and in Aix-en-Provence, France, and completed her MA and PhD in Comparative Canadian Literature at the Université de Sherbrooke. Her interests include Women’s Studies and the production and reception of translated literature in Canada. Elder currently lives in Fredericton in Canada’s only officially bilingual province, New Brunswick, where she spreads her energy across a large family, community work, writing postcard stories, editing and publishing fiction and poetry, doing research, and translating Acadian, Québec and Franco-Ontarian literature as well as books and texts on Acadian history, culture and art.

DATE OF BIRTH: January 9, 1859 PLACE OF BIRTH: Ripon, Wisconsin On February 12, 1885, Carrie married Leo Chapman, editor of the Mason City Republican In 1900, Susan B. Anthony, at 80 years old, retired as president of NAWSA and Carrie was elected her successor; a position she held until 1904. In 1902, in a speech before NAWSA, she said: She also founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA), which was officially recognized at a congress held in Washington, D.C., in 1902. Australia, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Norway, Sweden and the U.S. were affiliated with it. Carrie was elected its first president and served until 1923. "Do not stand in the way of the next step in human progress. No one living who reads the signs of the times but realizes that woman suffrage must come. We are working for the ballot as a matter of justice and as a step for human betterment." Woman Suffrage and Politics: The Inner Story of the Suffrage Movement She was 80 years old when World War II broke out. Her age and health prevented her from publicly campaigning any more, but she continued corresponding with influential people about helping war refugees and maintaining peace after the war. During her 40 years of continuous office-holding in all the varying organizations, she had never received a salary from any source at any time. On March 9, 1947, at the age of 88, Carrie Chapman Catt died of a heart attack in her home in New Rochelle, New York. By that time, women in most developed countries around the world had equal voting rights.

But, as in life, an end can be a beginning, and I tried to visualize life "after Pearl" and what I saw was private business and state government taking over various areas for expansion to accommodate the needs of our island for harbor space. Maybe this is a blessing. Don't get me wrong, the 4,200 people who might be out on the streets are of great concern, but the reality is that if we, Hawai'i, begin to think and act like the entrepreneurs we are, we will see the opportunities that can be ours. Private industry would scarf up those let go due to the Pearl closing. For once, let's try to look at the future rather than living in the past.

The SACME Web site was originally conceived and maintained by Bob Bollinger, for many years the Director of CME at Wayne State University School of Medicine. During the summer of 2000, a Communications Task Force , chaired by then SACME Vice President Jack Kues , was created to coordinate and facilitate information sharing within the Society. At the SACME Spring Meeting in April 2002, the Communications Task Force graduated to full SACME committee status. Since that time, the Web site has been constructed and managed cooperatively by Jim Ranieri of Prime Management, Birmingham, Alabama, and Anne Taylor-Vaisey of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Toronto, Ontario.
