Poro-elastic rebound along the Landers 1992 earthquake surface rupture by Gilles Peltzer, Paul Rosen, Francois Rogez Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA. and K. Hudnut, US Geological Survey, Pasadena, CA. Submitted to JGR on February 12, 1998 Revised: June 16, 1998 Abstract Maps of surface displacement following the 1992, Landers, California earthquake, generated by interferometric processing of ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, reveal effects of various post-seismic deformation processes along the 1992 surface rupture. The large scale pattern of the post-seismic displacement field includes large lobes, mostly visible on the west side of the fault, comparable in shape with the lobes observed in the co-seismic displacement field. This pattern and the steep displacement gradient observed near the Emerson-Camprock fault cannot be simply explained by after-slip on deep sections of the 1992 rupture. Models show that horizontal slip occurring on a buried dislocation in a Poisson's material produces a characteristic quadripole pattern in the surface displacement field with several centimeters of vertical motion at distances of 10-20 km from the fault, yet this pattern is not observed in the post-seismic interferograms. As previously proposed to explain local strain in the fault step-overs [ Peltzer et al ., 1996], we argue that poro-elastic rebound caused by pore fluid flow may also occur over greater distances from the fault, compensating the vertical ground shift produced by fault after-slip. Such a rebound is explained by the gradual change of the crustal rocks' Poisson's ratio value from undrained (co-seismic) to drained (post-seismic) conditions as pore pressure gradients produced by the earthquake dissipate. Using the Poisson's ratio values of 0.27 and 0.31 for the drained and undrained crustal rocks, respectively, elastic dislocation models show that the combined contributions of after-slip on deep sections of the fault and poro-elastic rebound can account for the range change observed in the SAR data and the horizontal displacement measured at GPS sites along a 60 km-long transect across the Emerson fault [

S-Lander
The L-Lander on Cu(100)
The L-Lander was designed for its internal 1.22 nm distance between the front and the back legs to be larger than the 0.7 nm of the simple Lander: the steric crowding between the legs is very small, offering a good conformational adaptability of the molecule to adsorb on a surface. An adsorbed L-Lander shows up in the STM images as 4 elongated lobes in a nearly rectangular configuration with no intramolecular contrast associated with the central board. As for many molecules of the Lander series, only the legs of the L-Lander are imaged. The central board is maintained by the legs too far away from the surface for its molecular orbitals to be electronically coupled enough to the surface. Experimental images were analysed and compared with calculated images based on an optimisation of the geometry of the legs to extract the adsorbed conformation of the molecule. The adsorption is dominated by the van der Waals interaction of the molecular board with the metal surface which forces the legs to rotate and to twist around their attaching bond to the board.

Evidence of Powerlaw Flow in the Mojave Mantle
Introduction
Laboratory experiments suggest that rocks in the lower crust and upper mantle (shallower than 200 km) should deform by dislocation creep, characterized by a strain rate proportional to stress raised to a power, n (e.g., Kirby and Kronenberg Carter and Tsenn , 1987). Dislocation creep has not yet been confirmed by geodetic observations. We use GPS campaign and continuous time-series data associated with 1992 Landers and 1999 Hector Mine earthquakes to infer rheologic properties of the Mojave lithosphere in southern California. The coupled nature of these earthquakes (20 km and 7 years apart) makes them ideal for a stringent rheology study in that a candidate rheologic model must satisfy the postseismic observations associated with both events. To infer the nature of viscous flow we developed a finite element model of this earthquake sequence that simulates coseismic slip associated with both events ( Wald and Heaton Dreger and Kaverina , 2000), a regional background strain rate ( Savage and Svarc , 1997), and temperature dependent powerlaw rheologies ( Hirth et al.

Chapter XXII.
BEHIND PRISON BARS.
When Regenia awakened the next morning the sun was high in the heavens. The accusation made by Mr. Foggs, together with his coarse familiarity, had served to keep her sleeplessly tossing from one side of the bed to the other the most of the night. She came down to a late breakfast still nervous and excited. For the first time during her short life she felt the poisonous sting of slander. Conscious of her innocence, she knew how impossible it is to defend a pure life against the insidious touches of that hidden serpent—a lie. She knew too well that error traveled like the hare; while truth took the gait of the tortoise. Mrs. Landers observed the forlorn look in Regenia's face as she left the table, her breakfast untouched. She could not eat. The cankerous lie had already robbed her of her roses. She returned to her room, locked the door and throwing herself across the bed gave way to a fit of passionate weeping. Again and again did Miss Wilson tap at the door, only to receive no reply. She could hear Regenia's bitter heart-rending sobs, but was powerless to take her that comfort which she knew her companion needed. Regenia had gone directly to her own room the night before, and consequently Miss Wilson was in blissful ignorance of the cause of her trouble. In the afternoon Dr. Leighton called. He sent up his card, but Regenia refused to make any answer to Mrs. Landers' repeated raps at her door. Mrs. Landers was for awhile non-plussed, but finally succeeded in opening the door. Regenia eyes and hair awry, was sitting on the bed when she entered.

South Kerry Senior Hurling Championships Semi-Finals:
Kilgarvan 3-9, Kenmare 1-6
IN a very entertaining local derby Kilgarvan overcame Kenmare in the South Kerry SHC semi-final in Kilgarvan on Sunday last, in a game played in ideal conditions.
Kilgarvan were in control all through but Kenmare never gave up the chase and pushed their neighbours all the way. Kilgarvan led at the interval by 1- 6 to 0-4, but Kenmare started the second half in a very businesslike manner but too often they found the rock solid Kilgarvan defence impossible to penetrate, with Hugh F Twomey, S Cremin and Philip Healy rock solid in the half back line and full back P Healy having a great game. As well as reliable goalkeeper, Florence O’Brien, Michael Foley had another very solid game and scored eight points for Kilgarvan. Others to play well were S O’Brien, P Sweeney and John Foley playing at full forward scoring a great goal. Kenmare were best served by J Whunton, L Lynch, N O’Sullivan, P Randels, T P O’Connor and by N O’Sullivan.
Kilgarvan: F O’Brien, F O’Donoghue, P Healy, J Kelliher, S Cremin, H F Twomey, P Healy, D O’Sullivan, J Dineen (0-1), S O’Brien (1-0), M Foley (0-8), D O’Sullivan, P Sweeney (1-0), J Foley (1-0), P O’Sullivan.
